Clyde E. Weed declares Anaconda the birthplace of many metallurgical advances and praises its research labs and reduction works. He hails alumina from clays, pilot plant progress, and predicts further developments while optimism for metal demand and jobs grows as the Diamond Jubilee celebration continues.
Gov. J. Hugo Aronson signed Montana’s 1958 property tax levy as requested by the State Board of Equalization. The 10 mill rate yields about 6.44 million dollars, with the increase of 2.7 mills over 1957 after adjustments. Counties will allocate funds to general, university bond, state hospital and related funds, though delinquencies and outstanding debts affect receipts.
President Eisenhower vetoed the independ ent offices bill citing 589 million dollars in unneeded Civil Service retirement funds. The measure totals 612 billion for 17 agencies and faces possible override by Congress. Senator Lyndon B. Johnson urged extended session to finish unfinished business.
Montana forecast shows fair conditions in both regions. East will see little temperature change with highs 75 to 85 and lows 45 to 55 on Tuesday, warming on Wednesday to 80 to 95. West, fair with slight Tuesday change, highs 70 to 80 and lows 40 to 50, warmer Wednesday with clouds increasing to 80 to 90.

Wallace Bear Jr and Albert Gonzales, Montana prison escapees, were recaptured near Garrison and near Drummond. Bear faced auto theft charges after initial stop. Gonzales was released then captured again by Capt. Harry Burnham while en route to Drumond.
Tom Ryan of Deer Lodge County announces a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of cattle rustlers in Powell and Deer Lodge counties. He says rustling has persisted for years with cases including steer's hind quarters taken after shootings.
The U S Eighth Circuit heard arguments on the suspension of integration at Central High School in Little Rock. The decision could affect desegregation pace across the South with a ruling expected within a month. The NAACP appealed the June 21 cooling off order, arguing delay invites violence.
Two men may figure in the 1960 presidential picture Gov. G mennen Williams of Michigan and Sen. Stuart Symington of Missouri are among candidates in primary elections Tuesday. Primaries are held in West Virginia and Kansas as well as Michigan and Missouri. Missouri Symington, former Secretary of the Air Force, has been discussed by Truman and others for the Democratic nomination.
Mrs Darlene Palmer a 21 year old mother is held on an open charge in Grays Harbor County Washington after her infant daughter was found buried 18 inches beneath a back porch Joyce Palmer six and a half months old was missing four days earlier Palmer admitted burying the baby and said an unknown assailant knocked her unconscious and took the child FBI agents and sheriff questioned her bruises on head and arm noted her husband 19 is being held as a material witness he worked at a sawmill nearby at the time of the alleged disappearance and is not involved in the death The search party aided by bloodhounds recovered the infant beneath the porch
Floyd E. Powell, a 45 year old Wisconsin prison administrative assistant, was named Montana Prison warden by Gov. J Hugo Aronson. Powell will report Aug. 24 to succeed acting warden William C Benson, praised for restoring discipline after the July 30 31 riot. Powell's $7500 annual pay includes housing and meals.
Western diplomats said the Soviet Union may announce its stance on a U.N. Security Council Middle East summit first through its United Nations delegation rather than Nikita Khrushchev. Russia reportedly plans to oppose General Chiang Kai-shek and Nationalist China taking part in the talks. Arkady Sobolev, Russia’s U.N. envoy, is seen as the likely spokesman.
US officials reported lingering doubt about Soviet Premier Khrushchev accepting Eisenhower's bid for a United Nations Security Council meeting. Some expect a Khrushchev reply within 24 hours, but uncertainty remains on a top level parley. Moscow sources speculated the next move could come from the U N delegation, while discussions pointed to a five power outside UN meeting including the United States Russia Britain France and India. The Peiping Mao meeting communique did not specify a UN framework.

Frank Kierdorf a 56 year old Teamsters Local 332 business agent in Flint said two men ambushed him at gunpoint soaked him with a flammable liquid and set him ablaze in a woods then dumped him at a Pontiac hospital. He survived but suffered extensive burns and identified the attackers by fingerprints. Kierdorf linked the attack to union business and noted a threatening call to his uncle a former Teamsters official.
Gen. Faad Shehab after election vows withdrawal of American troops as Lebanon’s top aim. President Chamoun rejects immediate pullout, says U.S. forces stay until security is established. Rebels press for Shehab to represent Lebanon at any summit before Chamoun’s term ends. Thirteen thousand U.S. troops remain in Lebanon.
Mrs. Barbara Fenn 75 of Helena dies after a single vehicle accident on U S Highway 10 thirty two miles east of Drummond. Her husband Frank 77 and daughter Susan Hendrickson 54 of Helena were hospitalized with injuries. The crash left six Granite County traffic deaths this year.
Secretary of State Dulles faced jeers from student protesters in Rio de Janeiro as his Brazil visit began. A banner reading Dulles Go Home appeared at the National Students Union headquarters, with police and riot gear ready to handle any trouble. Officials from President Kubitschek’s government greeted him with applause at the airport.
President Eisenhower signed a 386.7 million dollar atomic energy bill but said he may oppose some provisions. He criticized a proposed plutonium production reactor at Hanford Washington as unnecessary without further study and questioned converting such reactors for electricity generation citing added costs.
