The report notes areas virtually ruined by heavy rains with first cuttings of Bifalfa and native hay underway. Second cuttings of qifalta begin in early districts while haying is delayed by rain. In southeastern Montana Nayfield ranges dip locally. Grasshoppers have damaged some range grasses in south central and southeastern segments, but overall ranges and pastures remain in good condition.
In Lewistown on August 4 a Wyoming sheep dog named Blackie retired after Fred Butebeck of Arvada Montana sold his last herd. The dog soon resumed work, herding a small group of postients for about four hours daily.
The Texas ranpany announced on Tuesday that growth prospects in central Montana prompted relocation of its state headquarters from Shelby to Lewistown. The move will be completed by August 15.
The new armed forces draft is leveling off the panic with some 18 year olds allowed one year signups and reserve service on return. Registrations start August 30 with no high sign before September 22, and deferments are expected to be liberal as political promises. A Smithsonian anthropologist notes a cave man ideal of a perfect woman as square in all directions.
Maurice S Weiss 83, Helena and Butte hotel and restaurant pioneer, died at St Joan hospital after long illness following amputations. Born in Austria May 4 1869, he came to America at 12, built a Montana career, led the Placer and Finlen hotels, supported Helena sports, survived by nieces and nephews. Also Gov Spo appointed S D Waldo of Bozeman to five year term on state board of registration for civil engineers and land surveyors after a one day meeting approving 50 registrations.
The Montana Chamber of Commerce reported Paul Schubert and his wife are vacationing at Lost Cabir duce vansh near Avon. Mrs Schubert was editor in chief of Collier's magazine for several years. Schubert has authored eight books and writes for the Saturday Evening Post.
Helena Aug 9 Montana freight carloadings rose 2.2 percent in June 1948 from June 1947, according to Horace Chatman Casey of the state railroad commission. Wheat, coal, lumber, and livestock boosted the total, while sugar and other commodities lagged. 24,574 carloadings in June this year versus 24,036 last year.
Hamilton reports burglars rifled an eight safe at Cushma general store Monday night but missed the hinges of the shipping box. Sheriff F. O. Burrell said the only apparent theft was a door latch. burglars forced open a sack door and left.
Deer Lodge bulletin lists local notes from correspondent Jeravet with Circulacion G A Mephan and contact line Telephone 447. The fragment notes a news circle in progress and may indicate ongoing community coverage.
DEER LODGE Aug 3 A general meeting of the Powell County Civic association will join with the Treasure State Horse Ysi association and the Powell County Fair commission Friday evening Aug 6 at 8 o'clock at the courthouse. The meeting is open to the public to finalize plans for the 1948 Powell county fair the first since 1916 and appoint committees. Exhibits are open to all ages and colors with a separate division for 4 H and FFA. The fair will feature three days of thoroughbred horse races Sept 4 6 and 8 stage attractions Sept 4 and 5 and a Northwest carnival. Attempts to ready the fairgrounds are under way with increased exhibit space and livestock in shape to show. Divisions include cattle beef and dairy swine sheep wool poultry rabbits agriculture produce baked goods canned goods needlework hobbies flowers and more. The board invites residents to participate.
Deer Lodge residents will attend the funeral for Mary A. Davis in Missoula Lucy's chapel on Wednesday. Born May 17, 1876, she lived in Deer Lodge, later moved to Missoula, was active in Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers, and is survived by siblings in Deer Lodge and five grandchildren. Burial in the family plot in Missoula.
Police Judge A EB Cole reported that July yielded 27 cases with notable convictions. Fines and costs totaled 46 dollars for regular cases and 50 dollars for regular bonds plus 3 dollars for traffic violations. City funds increased by 10 dollars with suspended jail sentences totaling none. Frank W Wiley Montana Aeronautics director visited Deer Lodge on Tuesday.
Early returns show incumbents leading in Kansas and Virginia Democratic races. Randolph Carpenter leads in Kansas governor’s race while Wills Robertson holds a strong margin in Virginia. Missouri losses show Forrest Smith leading in the Democratic governor field with Dan Nee and Roy McKittrick also present. In Missouri and Kansas districts, Dewey Short and other Republicans build early leads as counts trickle in from St. Louis and Kansas City.
Health bulletin shows 117 communicable disease cases in Montana last week led by tuberculosis with 43 cases, 23 in Big Horn county. An infantile paralysis case was reported in Towle county. Chicken pox 17, diphtheria 10, measles eight, syphilis 10, gonorrhea six, cancer four, septic sore throat four, whooping cough three, and other illnesses noted.
Oscar Preble derby manager announced the Livingston trout derby first prize of $1000 with a choice of wrist watch or diamond ring for second prize. He noted other prizes for top fish and distance traveled while a juvenile robbery on Desmot Street reported by 12 year old collector Ellis involved three youths about 16, who escaped with $3 in small change after restraining him. The trio were described as about five foot ten, wearing a green scarf and red shirt, green shirt and blue overalls, and a brown leather jacket with blue overalls.
A student pilot named Charles F. Fiske faced a reckless flying charge in Powell County. Judge W. M. Linta fined him $5 and suspended 10 days in jail after he pleaded guilty. The case involved Wiley of the Montana Aeronautic Commission and a Seeley Lake dive on July 16.
Canvass of Montana's July 20 primary election began Tuesday with state leaders Secretary of State Sam W. Mitchell Governor Sam C. Ford and State Auditor John J. Habbes expected to certify and release their findings about Friday A separate item notes a Great Falls youth given a one year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to aiding a girl to escape from the state vocational school.
A local dated report notes Alex Litlefeld and Domweralle Ghaltman backing a presidential re election, denouncing any doubt about the candidate's appeal and showing firm political support in Deland Florida on August 3.
