CALCUTTA Aug 3 Japanese troops trapped west of the Sittang river in lower Burma have lost more than 9 250 men including over 8 600 killed in attempts to cross the river and reach Thailand a southeast Asia command communique announced. Indian troops crossed the Sittang east of Pyu killing more than 100 enemy on the river’s east bank as air forces hit Japanese positions in Nyangleben Pyu sector destroying huts and anti aircraft positions.

OPA Raises Soft Coal Ceiling Prices in 13 Districts
The Office of Price Administration announced a Friday night ceiling price increase averaging 3.47 cents per ton for soft coal in 13 districts. Increases range from 3 to 20 cents per ton and will be passed to consumers to meet the standard earnings margin of 15 cents a ton or the 1942 margin, whichever is greater.
