Gary Smith a 17 year old Seattle High School student was reported in serious condition at St. Ann Hospital after a gunshot wound to the abdomen occurred on Rock Creek near the Joe Gillis ranch about 40 miles west of Anaconda. Dale McNeil 16 of Anaconda said the single shot .22 rifle discharged when Smith reached for the gun then McNeil ran for help.

Bob Gutowski world record holder in the pole vault was killed in a car crash at Camp Pendleton California. The 25 year old Marine lieutenant died when a southbound car with two enlisted men crossed into his lane and collided head on. Gutowski rose from obscurity to set a 15 feet 8% inches vault in 1957 beating Cornelius Warmerdam's record. A Marine private Don Bragg had recently surpassed Gutowski with a 15 feet 9 inch vault in Olympic trials at Palo Alto, but Gutowski's 15 feet 9 inches was not ratified due to a technicality.
