MISSOULA Mont AP at least 105 new fires erupted in Region 1 forests Sunday bringing total to 339 in 48 hours mostly from lightning after hot dry weather. None over 10 acres except possibly three in the Clearwater Forest near Orofino Idaho threatening highly combustible areas. Smoke hung over western Montana with 33 smoke jumpers deployed and 11800 gallons of retardant dropped. Regional totals list fires across Nez Perce Bitter Root Gallatin and other districts with 234 fires from Saturday under control including a 30 acre blaze at Gates Park.

A 20-year-old smoke jumper John G. Benton of Silver Spring Maryland was hospitalized with a minor back injury after a helicopter rescue in western Montana. Benton, part of 144 jumpers deployed to fight 234 fires in Region 1, landed amid a tricky wind and was expected to be released Monday. He studies forestry management and works summers for the Forest Service.

Seven Escape Serious Injuries in Gas Explosion
WEIRTON West Virginia Seven people escaped serious injury when a two family apartment was leveled by a gas explosion and fire one mile north of the city. In the blast Richard Hixenbaugh and his wife were hurled from their living quarters to the garage below their home. Their 4 year old son Richard suffered a broken leg and eight month old James was found unharmed in his crushed crib. The Nesselrode family arriving at the garage as the blast hit lost a door and their 2 year old son Mark was torn from their arms. Debris and property loss totaled about 2500 dollars.

Munson Drowns While Skin Diving at Georgetown Lake
Arthur Myron Munson, 25, of 409 W. Third, an Anaconda High School athlete and diver, drowned around 4 p.m. Sunday while skin diving about 200 feet from Georgetown Lake pump station. It was Montana's 38th drowning this year, with Munson as the third at Georgetown and eight fewer than all of 1958. His companions Charles Schutty, Gerry Lyon, Thomas Villeneuve, Lee Roehl, and Ed Thompson witnessed the incident and reported no warning signs before Munson disappeared.

Louis Guaraszio a 53 year old Bridgeport Washington man died when his car crashed through a detour sign into concrete blocks near Lima Idaho. His 14 year old son suffered serious injuries in the crash which occurred as the pair attempted a detour at the Lima city limits.
