Heaviest Rain in Years Falls in Butte in June 1913
A steady rain drenched the Butte area for more than 16 hours, totaling 2.02 inches and threatening the 16 year record. Between noon and 6:30 pm about 1.18 inches fell. rainfall stopped by evening, leaving streets awash and gutters nearly a foot deep. Officials note it may be the heaviest since 1927, with the all time Butte record set in June 1913 at three inches.

Eight Montanans Win War Medals

Lightning Strikes Army Plane in Fiery Crash
In Mason City Iowa on August 2 a lightning strike hit an Army two engine Douglas plane. The strike ripped off a wing and caused a fiery crash. At least five men died and four bodies were recovered from the wreckage with a fifth found nearby. Searchers believed a sixth body remained in debris. The ship’s base and exact crew were not identified. A farmer witness described the plane’s sudden dive as the wing separated and the aircraft spiraled downward.
