In Miami Florida on August 2 the will of aviation pioneer Glenn H Curtiss named his widow Lena Curtiss and son Glenn H Jr as principal beneficiaries. Curtiss died in Buffalo on July 23. The will did not specify the estate value.
Babe Ruth belted his 39th homer of the season in the second game of a Yankees Washington doubleheader. The solo shot came in the fifth inning with no one on base, cutting the Senators’ lead to 9-4 as Fred Marberry pitched.
William A. McGonagle aged 69 president of the Duluth Misabe and Northern railroad and acting head of the Duluth and Iron Range railroad died at his Duluth home this afternoon. A pioneer and distinguished figure in the Northwest transportation scene.
Five men entered a dance hall in Delafield near Chicago and shot gangster Jack Zuta to death after a prior payday in July. The assailants opened fire in a massed assault, spraying bullets as dancers watched in shock. A car ambush earlier wounded a bystander and a streetcar motorman. Zuta vanished amid the gunfight.
Five Port Isabel fishermen drifted into open water when they harpooned a 16 foot ray in the Gulf of Mexico. The monster bound their boat with a rope, nearly capsizing it, before the line broke and the crew reached shore safely.
Two freight trains collided near McNeil Arkansas killing four aboard the northbound engine and fireman plus two on the southbound train who died attempting to jump. In Holstein Iowa four Holstein firemen died when their truck rolled over en route to a farm fire injuring banker Charles Kasner.
Hundreds battle fires across Cabinet Selway and Nez Perce forests near Trout Creek Lolo Hot Springs and Fish Creek. About 300 men work Marten Creek fire while 260 fight Coolwater fire. Porcupine fire 200 acres burned but brought under control as crews patrol White Sand Creek and Surveyor Creek areas.
Authorities in Vera Cruz order investigation into the death of three young cyclists struck by a train from Mexico City. Officials say the youths were slain and robbed by bandits who placed their bodies on the track.

Col Thomas Harry Lantry 61, general manager of Northern Pacific railway divisions from Montana, died suddenly in the Butler hotel coffee shop in Beattle. He had been ill for a week but worked daily and was reportedly taken ill while in Grays Harbor territory on an inspection trip last week. He pressed on with an inspection tour to Spokane before collapsing.
At Roosevelt Field on August 2, Robert Black and Louis Reichers failed to set an endurance flight record after 13 days aloft. Their plane landed safely on a golf course near the field when the motor slowed and stopped about 1,000 feet up. Reichers quipped after the landing.
A 13 year old district court suit before Judge Riley seeks appointment of counsel as trial motions advance. Plaintiff Mrs. 8. F. Tuttle sues Northern Pacific Oregon Short Line Butte Cab and Transfer Co and Dan Quinn for damages from lost baggage. Original filing Aug 2 1917 before Justice Louis A. Ora y Plaza lodge B P O E of Virginia City hosts the largest Montana Elks convention August 15 to 17 with a revival of Vigilante day sports and amusements. The Cray Plaza lodge, founded with help from Vivian of the early Elks, leads planning. O M Holbert chairs the general committee assisted by Ora y Plata workers.
Seven Butte groups host annual outdoor outings today drawing residents to picnics at Gregson Teddy Bear Inn Basin and other local spots. Hosts include St Mary’s parish sodalities Cristoforo Colombo society and DeMolay chapters along with the Knights of Pythias.
