Miners on Butte Hill reported to work Thursday after an Anaconda Co reopening order. The move followed a court restraining order against BA&P railroad unions and local teamsters, with negotiations to continue and a hearing set for Aug. 8.
Labor dispute between Butte Teamsters Local No. 2 and Anaconda Co. escalates as court grants two temporary restraining orders. Judge John B. McClernan sets August 8 for show cause hearing. Orders bar union persuasion and picketing against BA&P trains serving the Anaconda Co. and other shippers.
Unions in the Anaconda Co. plants at Butte Great Falls and Anaconda voted Wednesday on a proposed settlement. Results will be tallied Thursday at 2 PM in Butte by three judges with the negotiating committee present. The offer includes wage hikes and health and pension improvements through June 30, 1964.

Sherman Hodges a federal mediator from Great Falls reported that Local 623 and downtown Butte electrical contractors reached a settlement. The union accepted the agreement providing wage increases of 20 cents per hour on Aug 1 1962 20 cents on June 1 1963 and 10 cents on June 1 1964. The contract runs two years and 10 months ending May 31 1965. John Sommers led the union committee E. E. Sullivan led the contractors with Jack Sullivan as secretary.
Northern Region forest officials reported 13 smokejumpers were dropped on a dangerous Stanton Mountain fire near Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park. Planes from Missoula and Kalispell dumped 1,500 gallons of chemical retardant to slow the blaze.
East German Communist leader Walter Ulbricht departed for the Soviet Union for a conference with Premier Nikita Khrushchev. Western diplomats speculate on possible dramatic moves around Berlin crisis and on a separate peace treaty with East Germany.
Russell Lee Allen, three, of Butte, died after running into a ¾ ton Anaconda Forest Protection truck on Highway 10A near Cable Creek Junction. He was dragged 39 feet. coroner reports this as Deer Lodge County’s fourth traffic fatality of the year.
St. James Hospital will close with patient admissions redirected to St. James Community Hospital. Surgery shifts begin Aug. 7 at the community hospital, with emergency care moving there and outpatient tests relocated by Aug. 6. The closure ends the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth era in Butte, begun in 1881.
Montana Power Co and Local No. 44 IBEW failed to reach a settlement after a three day session in the Federal Building. The union has been on strike since July 1. The company proposed a 25 cent per hour wage rise over 23 months for most workers and 35 cents for Butte dispatchers, costs rising beyond 30 cents hourly with benefits. The union said no substantial change was offered to members for a vote. Mediators Bob McClelland and Sherman Hodges organized the talks. negotiations recessed pending further action by either side.

Duane Scharosch, 21, of Billings, was killed and David McCall, 21, of Billings, seriously injured when a car went out of control and hit a tree in Billings. The vehicle was head-south. Scharosch died on arrival. The crash is under investigation. The death toll for 1962 reaches 126, compared with 164 a year ago on this date.
President Kennedy said the United States could offer Moscow easier terms for a nuclear test ban if on site inspections on Soviet soil are accepted. He cited technical advances that help detect small explosions and noted on site checks are needed to distinguish nuclear blasts from earthquakes.
President Kennedy signed a 4.6 billion foreign aid measure on Wednesday praising bipartisan support and linking aid to national security. The bill merely authorizes funds with Congress to provide actual money later and aims to trim at least 2 billion from the total.

E V Sonny Omholt filed Wednesday for the Montana state auditor on the Republican ticket. He took the post May 22 after the death of John Holmes and also holds ex officio insurance commissioner investment commissioner and fire marshal titles. Omholt, born in Great Falls March 29 1920, attended Fort Shaw High School and served in the U S Army after attending Northern Montana College in Havre.
