Severe electrical storms set off 234 fires in Region 1 forests on Saturday. Forest Service flew 144 smoke jumpers on about 40 blazes, marking the heaviest fire action of the season. Rain and cooler temperatures later reduced danger, while officials flagged a possible record jumper deployment but not necessarily a single-day fire total.
Andrea Pallister eight, heads a ten child brood with Dr and Mrs Philip Pallister of Boulder. Nine brothers range from two to eighteen months to eighteen. The older boys help carry payroll chores while Andrea dreams of managing a future family baseball team. Jeffrey and Gregory, both born outside Montana, accompany a quirky biblical naming story.
In Saint Omer France Lucien Francois 62 pursues his daughter and her suitor Raymond Barthelmey on a motorcycle knocking them off their bike. Raymond goes to the hospital and Lucien lands in jail though he expects the couple to wed in a month with Lucien’s blessing.
Helena police pursued 18 year old Tom LePier after he fled from headquarters following a traffic incident. He was shot by Officer John Barthule in a Jewish cemetery northwest of Helena. the 38 caliber wound was described as not serious and the youth was said to be recovering.
The forecast notes partial cloudiness and thundershowers across Montana with cooler readings, while a Helena incident reports a minor in a crash scene, fled arrest, and later detention for juvenile investigation after a pursuit across the city including a cemetery chase. LePier, 5 foot 10, was later found, armed with a pipe and 2x4, resisting capture before escape and recapture efforts continued.
John Hinch a 47 year old former Butte High School football star and chief timekeeper for the Anaconda Co uranium mill was badly injured in a Thursday night crash on U S 66 near a motel and cafe. His car collided with a Phoenix man’s vehicle driven by Daniel W Cook. Hinch suffered a brain concussion and facial cuts and is in St Joseph Hospital Albuquerque in serious condition.
Frederick Dick 32, of Hove, drove to the Sussex coast with a new motorboat. After rain and choppy seas, he fell overboard and was rescued by a passing dinghy. He tried to return to his car but the jacket with his keys remained in the boat, which drifted into the Channel.
Vice President Nixon addressing Soviet viewers warned that Khrushchev may try to spread communism if given time. He said U S bases will encircle the USSR until fears of self defense recede and urged mutual understanding for peace. He stressed Americans do not seek to impose systems on others and that people should choose their own paths.
Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell calls on labor and management to resume good faith collective bargaining after 18 days of strike. He says both sides have shown little effort and have not engaged with the mediation service, urging responsible talks to resolve the dispute.
School District No. 1 reports 29 teachers lost this summer through retirement resignations or leaves of absence. George Haney says this is the largest loss in years and cites higher salaries elsewhere. Six will not be replaced due to budget curtailment from declining enrollment.
The fourth annual Water Resources conference closes as an interim committee is formed to study groundwater legislation. The panel will report to the 1960 conference held at the Montana School of Mines. Appointments include Prof. Albert Stone, Judge Ralph Anderson, Dr. S. L. Groff, Mrs. Ruth Koch, and other officials.
The Vatican press office issued a prayer by Pope John XXIII for drivers. It asks Almighty God to remind motorists of their responsibility and to guide them in charity and prudence on the road.
Roy E. Murray Jr. of Butte announces the Montana Automobile Dealers Assn plan a two day conference at the Finlen Hotel August 7 and 8 with over 300 members and guests expected. The 44th annual meeting is led by Norman Brekke of Scobey as president and Arnold Hannah of Shelby as board chair. Officers meet Thursday. Friday begins with a 9 30 a m convention opening.
Radio Moscow condemned Richard Nixon's Moscow address as distorting Soviet foreign policy. The station praised some words but said Nixon dodged U.S. base issues, claiming bases are defensive while pledging removal if threats vanish.
A cabin near Denton's Point on Georgetown Lake was burned late Saturday. Firefighters from Opportunity Volunteer Fire Dept responded around midnight. Volunteers cut trees with a power saw to prevent spread toward Deer Lodge National Forest and local reports indicated the blaze was under control.
Robert Lockwood Wilcox, former Miles City Bank vice president and former Federal Reserve examiner, is indicted on four counts for handling bank funds. A bench warrant was issued, bond set at 1000 dollars, and he posted bail to await formal pleading in Billings. The indictment lists eight named defendants, with four cases already made public after arrests.
Puerto Rico welcomes U S governors for their annual Nelson A Rockefeller conference. New York Governor Rockefeller dominates the meeting, seen as a leading rival to Nixon for the Republican presidential nomination. He arrives in San Juan amid business and social program roles and political focus.
The Anaconda Co plans a block caving zinc operation tapping Elm Orlu and Black Rock mines. Seventy two men are employed, with first ore production expected next spring and 180 workers to be hired then. The project uses Badger shaft hoisting, 36 inch gauge track, updated ore pocket, car dump, cleaner, and dust collection.
John Manson Owens Jr of Savannah Georgia reunited privately with his son John Manson III after a weeklong Grand Canyon survival. The 15 year old was rescued from a Colorado River sandbar by helicopter as park rangers had given up hope. He survived six days on cactus pulp and mesquite beans before gains in strength allowed a brief stay at the hospital.

Sixteen smoke jumpers waited as winds abated, with additional fires reported near Pioneer Ridge and Gyp Mountain.
Montana hopes to host a 1960 Governors Conference in Glacier National Park. Gov J Hugo Aronson announced the plans after talks with Lee Newspapers executives in Montana. Illinois Gov William Stratton chairs the location committee and pledged backing from several state leaders.
A 35 foot birch tree in Loren Findly of 1806 Grand was struck by lightning Saturday afternoon. The bolt occurred about 5 p m amid a thunderstorm that dropped a third inch of rain, with another storm earlier bringing .36 inch total. Temperatures rose to 86 degrees.
