The War Food Administration announced a move to ease butter shortages for civilians in August. It reduced the military and war requirement set-aside from 40 to 30 percent, allowing more butter to be released under rationing. Officials noted lard supplies have been ample in recent weeks and expect adequate civilian butter without additional set-aside.
A glider crash at Lambert Field during a public Army demonstration killed ten people including St. Louis Mayor William Dee Becker and two Army officers. The dead list also names Thomas Dysart, Max Doyne, Charles Cunningham, Judge Henry Mueller, Major William Robertson, Captain Milton Klugh, Lt Col Paul Hazleton, Harold Kreuger, and J M Davis. The glider was about 1500 feet up when explosions occurred, its left wing detached, and it plunged near the administration building.
Vienna Ga Aug 1 Senator F George chair of the Senate finance committee warns that drastic income tax hikes may harm the middle class and reduce potential revenue to five or six billion dollars, about half the administration's need. He notes federal income around 35 billion annually, could rise to about 40 billion with new taxes, and stresses uniform rates limit drastic increases in 1943.

President Lin Sen of China died Sunday evening and funeral services will be held today. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek was named acting president by the central executive committee after Lin Sen’s death. Lin Sen, ally of Sun Yat-Sen, had served as vice president of the executive yuan from 1928 to 1931 and as president after Chiang Kai-Shek’s resignation in 1932. Born in Foochow Fukien.
German Propaganda Minister Goebbels ordered the immediate evacuation of all Berlin residents. NBC and Reuters reports in Stockholm cited Goebbels acting as gauleiter and noted fear of saturation bombing similar to Hamburg. Authorities also ordered evacuations of school children and non essential adults from Berlin.
Allied headquarters report torpedo and dive bombers continued pounding the Munda air base in New Georgia with 27 tons of bombs aimed at gun emplacements and supply dumps. Direct hits were noted as the campaign slows amid bad weather, while a night patrol targeted Kolombangara and Fifth Air Force Mitchells hit Gasmata on New Britain.
