The House passes a six month extension to domestic oil price controls by 303 to 117 as talks with Ford stall. Federal Energy Administrator Frank G Zarb predicts a Ford veto, with price ceilings set to lapse if not signed. Congress heads for a month long recess before potential veto override.
The New York Times reports the release of five microfilms known as the pumpkin papers, used to accuse Alger Hiss of communism. Some films were blank or faintly legible and related to Navy documents on life rafts, parachutes, and fire. Hiss maintains he never passed these papers to Whittaker Chambers. The disclosures follow decades after Chambers led investigators to the garden pumpkin patch where the reels were kept. These papers aided the House committee investigation led by Richard Nixon.
