Washington AP reports a revenue reform bill includes 6.9 billion in relief mainly for low and moderate earners. The plan cut rates for those under 100 000 dollars with a 63 percent cut for the 3 000 dollar and under bracket and gradual standard deduction increases. The bill also keeps a 5 percent income surtax through July 1, 1970.
Western Air Lines says all Montana and other affected offices will close at end of Thursday shift due to the machinists strike. Six offices in Billings Great Falls Helena and Butte will shut. Los Angeles reports 800000 daily revenue loss since the strike began, with 1100 workers remaining on the job across 15 states.
Butte area highlights a busy schedule with the Silver Bow County Fair in the Civic Center, 4-H livestock and crafts exhibits, plus flower shows, Krazy Dazes, and various fairs and rodeos across Billings Lewistown Glasgow Polson Frazer Helena and Polson. Motorcycle races near Butte close the week.
Mayor Mike Micone announces the new Butte Municipal Pool at Stodden Park will be open free from 1 p.m. today through Sunday with free supervision, lifeguards, and police presence. Open swim starts at 2 p.m. today. a dedication ceremony is set for 11 a.m. Monday. after weekend, nominal fees apply with tiered pricing and expanded hours including mothers and tots sessions and new lesson registrations.

In a regular session Powell County commissioners approved a $715,835 preliminary budget requiring a 46 mill levy, up 3.15 mills from last year due to a reduced tax base. The Montana Power Co assessment was rolled back by $361,683 from $2,528,901. a protest has been filed citing improvements at the gas pumping plant north of Deer Lodge and new transmission lines. The budget is on file for taxpayers to inspect and comments or protests will be heard until the second Monday in August when the final budget is set.
Pasadena reports Mariner 6 skimmed 2 130 miles above Mars to relay a 24 picture sequence of the planet’s surface. The first shot showed Mare Erythraeum a cratered desert area about 50 miles across. A delay in processing signals was blamed on a missing element in the spacecraft’s data feed.
A Mariner 6 image series shows craters on far distant surfaces with No 9 a deep crater, No 10 two large pits, and a 300 mile across crater with clouds. Officials say clouds may arise from moisture or sunlight. Two cameras captured 17 minutes of imagery from 4,800 miles to 2,130 mile range.
The Senate rejected a full-year tax cut plea and approved a six month extension at 10 percent, sending the measure to the House. The House earlier voted to grant a 12 month extension, but time ran short for payroll withholdings before the deadline.
An early Thursday one car crash on Bridger Canyon Road near Bozeman killed 17 year old Keith F. Aldrich and severely injured two other Bozeman youths, Tom Dahl 18 and Lem Love III 19. Dahl and Love were flown to Columbus Hospital in Great Falls for neurosurgery.
A group of hippies left Helena after checque larceny lingers in city with 35 bad checks totaling about 2000 dollars. They left a letter to the Independent Record thanking residents for hospitality and promising to make the most of it.
At Tokyo International Airport Secretary of State William P. Rogers was targeted by Shigetsugu Hamao ka, 21, who charged with a seven inch knife. State Department guard Joseph McNulty and Japanese security subdued the assailant. Ambassador Armin Meyer was knocked down but unhurt. A note on Okinawa demands and revenge for bayonets was found on Hamao ka.
