Rebels machine gunned a speeding car and then opened fire on a crowd of more than 1,000 bathers at Caroubier Beach 50 miles west of Algiers. Eleven people died and seven were wounded as forces searched the hills after the assault.
Reports from Havana say Fidel Castro remains convalescent from pneumonia and is improving, fueling speculation that he will take a leave of absence and name his brother Raul to act as prime minister. Radio Habana and Radio Mambi cited army doctors but offered no official confirmation.
Post election violence rose in South Korea with ballot burning and protests prompting new elections in 11 districts. Home Minister Lee Ho said 72 people were arrested for attempting to block vote counting from Friday’s parliamentary election won by the Democratic party. Two factions, led by John M. Chang and Yoon Bosun, loom over the party’s future as mass demonstrations continue in Seoul region.

A six year old boy died in a Great Falls hospital from head injuries after being struck by a car Sunday morning. Police said he ran into the road from between parked cars as Charles H. Hopper drove by. Coroner C. E. Magner will decide on an inquest after police and county attorney investigations. The death raises Montana highway fatalities to 116 for the year.
Ten people sheltered in a farmer's hut near Kumamoto when a weekend downpour triggered a lightning strike. Five were killed and the other five injured. Local officials investigated the incident and urged caution during storms.
The Associated Press reports that Nixon and Kennedy, both 47 and Democratic rival Stevenson, pressed campaign plans as the race to Nov 8 intensifies. Nixon resumes with strategy conferences before trips to Nevada California Hawaii and Washington. Kennedy coordinates foreign policy talks and a nationwide tour led by Robert F. Kennedy while meeting Stevenson for support.

Drea Wood, 19, Miss Billings Heights, swimesuit winner. The winner will compete in Miss America finals in Atlantic City Labor Day weekend.
The National Bureau of Investigation said a package of cigarettes sent from Red China contained an anti Communist appeal. The document urged Chinese in the Philippines who write to China to place the mark of the heart as an anti Communist sign and claimed the Chinese Communists can never win the hearts of millions of anti Communist countrymen.
In Cozad Nebraska the arrest of escapee Gerald Hudson alias Gerald Bennett ends a year on the FBI ten most wanted list. A local store owner and banker provided tips after recognizing him from FBI circulars and matching a scar. Hudson, a former Pennsylvania killer, waives preliminary, bound to Omaha on 25000 dollar bond, jailed in Dawson County awaiting marshal arrival.
