Young Helena man killed on highway construction site
In Helena Montana an accident on Interstate 15 construction left Clarence Richard Jones 22 dead on his first day on the job. He was driving a heavy earthmoving vehicle that rolled off a grading into an embankment pinning him beneath. Sheriff Coroner Dave Middleman noted the machine was loaded and appeared to have brakes in working order. No inquest planned. He is survived by his infant son wife Carol and his parents all of Helena.

Escape attempt at Montana State Prison injures guard
Frank Marron 54 was hospitalized after an escape attempt late Sunday at Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge. Four inmates including Dennis Sullivan 24 Jerry Walker 24 Stan Erickson 23 and Leroy Schlein ing 22 attacked Marron in Rothe Hall Dormitory, but guards quickly stopped the effort and Marron recovered.
