Lewis and soft coal operators resume contract talks with Labor Secretary Schwellenbach reporting groundwork to keep talks going toward settlement. Secretary Byrnes announced that the United States had submitted drafts of peace treaties with Germany and Japan to the Allied powers, seeking swift German disarmament and a new multilateral framework to prevent a repeat of early postwar mistakes. MacArthur refused to permit extra precautions for his protection. This is the first confirmed conspiracy against Allied occupation leaders.
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek rejected Gen. Marshall's last-ditch demands as Chinese Communists resisted, ending efforts to halt the Manchurian warfare.
Butte trustees decided to shift to daylight saving time starting Wednesday. Classes will begin an hour earlier and district business will run on DST to align with the city. A grass and forest fire driven by a NW wind swept along Yoga creek, five miles north of the Judith ranger station near Utica, burning 1200 acres of timberland. About 60 ranchers fought the blaze with crews organized from Stan ford and local areas. officials say the fire, man caused, threatens Yogo Creek region ranches and Yogo Creek Mining structures.
Berlin reports the first group of 44 American Army wives and 21 children arriving by train after a 14 hour voyage from Bremerhaven aboard the Thomas H. Barry. Manila April 29 Sergio Osmena defeated for re election plans to retire to his Cebu farm after May 28 when Manuel Roxas takes office to become the first president of the Philippines republic. Osmena conceded Roxas election and wished him well in a formal statement. Roxas leads by 183000 votes as returns near completion. Osmena may not return to public life after leaving Malacanan palace. He owns farms but little time for them amid politics. many Cebu homes were destroyed during liberation.
Mrs. Weldon Dicking and a passenger leaped to safety when her light pickup struck a Pennsylvania railroad train at a crossing on Monday. She walked away from the wreckage, then fainted after surveying the twisted vehicle.
