The administration pushed plans to begin two new 45,000 ton battleships and a flotilla of mosquito boats, part of an $800,000,000 Navy appropriation for 1940. Bids for nine high speed mosquito boats will be opened May 25 as part of a $40,000,000 experimental program to test deadly mobile ships.
Two Soviet airmen en route from Moscow to New York forced a landing on Miscou Island, New Brunswick after radio and oxygen failures. Brig. Gen. Vladimir Kokkinaki and Maj. Mikhail Gordienko survived the crash and awaited aid as rescuers reached the scene.
London reports Britain maintains Hitler speech left Europe’s troubles as they were. A cabinet review set for Monday will also study conscription and Palestine. A former convict Elke Weide naar, 32, Bozeman alias Ed Wagner, was jailed in Yellowstone county after a plane crash 17 miles north of Livingston. He is charged with swindling a local auto dealer of 383 dollars by obtaining a car April 18 and selling it to a second firm. He was arrested as he attempted to strip numbers from the wrecked aircraft before burning it.

Sales of 1939 automobile license plates in Silver Bow county rose compared with 1938 as the deadline to avoid a 10 percent penalty passed. Many operators still had not obtained licenses. the penalty takes effect Monday except for dealer and certain post May 1 foreign/new car purchases. Deputies reported 10,856 passenger plate sales, up from 10,700 a year earlier.
