In the An Khe Pass battle, four American and Korean personnel died in helicopter crashes and attacks. Low altitude flights under North Vietnamese fire left crews vulnerable as mortar rounds bore on the pad. A rescue team recovered the wounded and bodies within hours as combat continued.
The Montana Supreme Court barred 19 Voter Education Committee members plus state officials from further public funding of voter education for the constitutional convention. Delegates formed a private group to continue education activity while the court decision drew praise from Oscar S. Kvaalen who supported objective presentations.
The Senate Finance Committee, by 10 to 4, substitutes a work or lose benefits scheme for most AFDC recipients in the welfare reform bill. About 1.2 million childless adults would join a Federal Employment Corporation and face wages as low as 1.20 dollars hourly. The plan shifts 29 million poor to aid versus 19 million under the House bill. No Republicans supported the move and Senator Griffin was absent.
The Butte Carpenters Union Local 112 may strike Monday if emergency steps are not taken this weekend. Carpenters walked out last May 1 pending a new contract after weeks of impasse with the contractors' association. Meanwhile Butte General Laborers Local 163 approved a one year contract effective May 1 after settlement with employers.
North Vietnamese tanks led a broad assault in Quang Tri Province driving toward Hue and overrunning part of Fire Base Bastogne near Hue. Dong Ha fell early as the attack closed in on Quang Tri town with 40,000 troops. Saigon forces faced higher enemy numbers while U.S. naval and air actions intensified. casualties and civilian flee events accompanied the surge.
Apollo 16 astronauts John W. Young Thomas K. Mattingly II and Charles M. Duke Jr. cruise toward Hawaii aboard USS Ticonderoga after a safe splashdown. Doctors report excellent health and reduced radiation exposure from the solar flare. They will fly to Hickam AFB and then Ellington AFB near Houston to complete the return and deliver 245 pounds of moon rocks and mission film.
Staff Sgt. Tori Olson, 20, of Laurens New York, underwent March 31 at Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center a pioneering procedure. Surgeons drained nearly all his blood and replaced it with a saline solution while cooling him in bloodless suspended animation for eight to ten minutes before reintroducing donor blood. The operation produced a dramatic recovery with no organ damage and may aid severe liver failure cases. Col. Gerald Klebanoff led the team and said the method could help others with liver failure.
Discovery Basin Inc. of Philipsburg submitted the sole bid for Rumsey Mountain ski development in the Philipsburg district. The minimum proposed development is 347000 dollars with a maximum option up to 998000 dollars. Forest Service will study alternatives in Butte and Missoula before any contract award. George M. Smith will send Bernie Alt to Missoula for a final recommendation.
Drill teams from 28 schools will perform in a parade through uptown Butte starting at 11 a.m. Saturday. Forming at the Finlen Hotel, teams march west on Broadway south on Montana east on Park to Wyoming and finish at Butte High School. The Big Sky Drill Team Competition sponsored by the Butte Chamber of Commerce and Butte High School features an afternoon meet at 1:30 and a second show at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the venue.
