President Johnson, addressing a White House dinner of 530 corporate leaders, said a second tax cut could follow the $12 billion package if it boosts production, creates jobs, and helps balance the budget. He warned costs must stay in check and noted plans for a union leaders dinner next month.
Gov. William W. Scranton ran away with Republican presidential write-ins in Pennsylvania as 1,445 of 9,261 precincts reported. Lodge, Goldwater, Nixon and Rockefeller trailed with smaller totals while Nelson Rockefeller and President Nixon trailed. In Philadelphia a special congressional election elected William J. Green III to replace his late father William J. Green Jr. Green defeated Edward Rovner, giving Pennsylvanian delegation 18 Democrats and 14 Republicans.
Henry Cabot Lodge captures a strong write-in win on the Massachusetts Republican ballot and wins Democratic write-ins as well. Results show Lodge leading Goldwater and Nixon in GOP totals while Johnson leads Democrats. delegate slates support Lodge for the San Francisco convention.
President Johnson admitted lifting his two beagles Him and Her by the ears for a photo session. Veterinarians and animal groups including the SPCA and AKC condemned the act, arguing it harms animals. White House aides noted no official response to the complaints as criticism spread.
Mrs. Lucile Hosmer of San Carlos California urged a four county Republican women conference in Butte to re examine American government principles and emphasize consent of the governed. Speakers included Mrs. Ted Woodward and Mrs. Harry Roe with ceremonies led by Mrs. Einar Larson. Local welcome extended by Mrs. Ray Ball as candidates and music from a Civil War era ensemble filled the program.
Mrs Pasqualita Williamson aged 27 and her three children Rose Lucy 3 Johanna 2 and James 5 months were found shot in their Crow Agency home. Investigators indicated a possible murder suicide with a .22 rifle found nearby. Husband Virgil Williamson, Crow Indian, was missing. Bodies moved to Hardin. Authorities oversee jurisdiction with FBI and Indian Police.
France withdraws its officers from NATO naval headquarters and councils affecting about 10 officers while 75,000 ground troops and three German air wings remain in NATO. Paris says the move extends earlier steps toward an independent French military command though will keep liaison for war.
Sen Clair Engle 52 withdraws from California Democratic Senate race due to brain ailment. He endorses no candidate in the June primary, leaving 12 Democrats on the ballot including Alan Cranston and Pierre Salinger. Engle’s withdrawal may boost Cranston’s chances as his name runs again.
Airman J C Paul Alston 28 of Johnsonville SC died in a Great Falls street crash near Gunther AFB area after a head injury from being thrown into a windshield. He had just returned from Alabama and left a widow and four children in South Carolina.
Princess Irene of Holland will wed Don Carlos of Bourbon Parma in a simple family ceremony at St Mary Major Basilica in Rome. The couple's wedding follows a day of fittings and events, amid Dutch royal tensions over her conversion to Roman Catholicism.
The forecast calls for fair and slightly warmer conditions in Butte and Anaconda today with rising clouds tonight. Highs around 64, with tonight's low near 36. East of the divide expect fair to warmer conditions Wednesday and Thursday, with increasing clouds in the northwest Thursday. highs 65 to 75, lows 35 to 45. West of the divide remains fair and warmer, with increasing clouds and a few afternoon showers Thursday. highs 65 to 72, lows 35 to 45. Continuous 12 hour highs, 16 hour minimums, and 24 hour precipitation ending 5 pm Tuesday.
Joseph H. Grenier of Deer Lodge died in a local hospital after a long life as an electrician and public servant. Born September 5, 1888 in St Paul he worked for Northern Pacific and Montana Power before moving to Deer Lodge in 1923. He served on the City Council and in the American Legion and was a longtime Montana Veterans Welfare Commission member. Survived by his widow Mary Requiem High Mass planned in Immaculate Church.
