Howling blizzards with six foot snowdrifts hit southern Montana on Friday as winds of 25 to 35 mph created drifts and road blocks. The storm was to abate Saturday with temperatures dropping to 20 to 30 degrees, while motorists were urged to use caution and device chains on several passes.
The United States nears 60 million jobs as civilian employment hits 58,668,000 with 1,117,000 gain in industry and farms between March 11 and April 8. Unemployment falls to 3,515,000 on April 8, while factory orders rise and nonfarm employment reaches 51,473,000 in April.
In a nationwide NLRB vote CIO's International Union of Electrical Workers won representation for about 28 000 Westinghouse workers in 20 units across 31 cities while the United Electrical Workers trailed with 22 817 to 27 281 in the popular count. At East Pittsburgh plant CIO IUE led UE 5 763 to 5 673 with 147 votes challenged possibly altering the result.
Thousands of high school students clashed with police in Manhattan for a fourth day of demonstrations. About 5000 youths surged through Foley Square while mounted and foot officers dispersed the crowds for four hours. Authorities warned of another march on Saturday as judges and civic leaders voiced alarm over the unrest.
Catholic Premier designate Paul Van Zeeland said after midnight he will resign later Saturday following failed talks with the Liberal party that holds key to the royal crisis. He urged Liberal cooperation with his Catholic Social Christian group in a new government.

During D-day of Swarmer war games at Fort Bragg North Carolina two paratroopers were killed and 77 injured as nearly 4 000 paratroopers and vast airlift tested air moved assault plans. Corp George W Cooley of Houston Texas died after ejecting an artillery piece from a giant transport plane. An unidentified 82nd division paratrooper died when his parachute failed to open.
The Ana conda Copper Mining company will shift operations in Butte to daylight saving time starting 7 a m Monday May 1. Daylight time begins at 7 a m and standard time ends at six a m deltas shift.
Two American travelers Prof. Raymond Kennedy Yale sociologist and Robert Doyle Time Life writer were shot to death on a jeep trip in west Java. They were last seen leaving Bandoeng en route to Jogjakarta when a uniformed band halted their vehicle and killed them.
Lt. Lee Koon Soon, 24, defected from the North Korean air force to South Korea, stating the ruling class mistreats citizens. He landed a Stormovik IL-2 at Pusan on the southeast coast and predicted more pilots would follow.

Savage Oklahoma Texas tornadoes killed at least nine, possibly twelve, and injured more than 100. At Holdenville, five dead were reported but only three confirmed. Clyde Texas saw three of a family die, and near Baird an elderly couple perished. Homes and farms were leveled across seven spots amid hail and lightning.
Paris April 28 The French government fired Frederic Joliot Curie head of the atomic energy commission and ousted him from the Institute of Scientific Research effective immediately. Moderate and rightist leaders hailed the move as a cleansing, while Joliot Curie offered no comment.
