A 16th century Titian dating to 1563 was snatched from a village parish church back door. The grand master's late period painting, valued at $500,000, was linked to an Old World tradition of Titian painting for grateful townspeople. Weather notes follow on Page 2.
Hubert Horatio Humphrey, 56, announces his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in a national televised address from the Shoreham Hotel. He vows unity, patriotism, and mature leadership while avoiding immediate policy specifics and signaling a run for delegates in nonprimary states.
The Associated Press reports quick reactions from McCarthy Nixon Reagan and Wallace. McCarthy says Indiana primaries could feel slight effects while broader impact seems limited. Nixon praises Humphrey as an eloquent Johnson ally and predicts constructive participation. Reagan calls it not changing GOP stance toward statism, while Wallace notes potential cross party support but unlikely to alter his own Texas bid.
Betht helper Linda Aasen a seven year old girl holds a lispy version of Yes for Kids button supporting the Salem Oregon school district budget in the election May 6. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Andrew Aasen of Salem.
A Bozeman woman, Mae Papke Maloney, 45, is listed in critical condition with head injuries at St. James Community Hospital after a Friday crash on Woodville Hill east of Butte. Her car rolled several times at the U S 91 and Interstate 15 junction. passenger Roy Peden, 55, was uninjured.
Americans and veterans joined mass antiwar demonstrations and Loyalty Day parades in cities nationwide. In New York City thousands marched to a Central Park rally with speakers including Mrs Martin Luther King Jr and Mayor John V Lindsay. Estimates placed the Sheep Meadow crowd between 40 000 and 100 000. The Loyalty Day parade drew 5 000 to 8 000 marchers and broke up hours before the Central Park event, ending several blocks south of the park.
Butte and Silver Bow County adopt a computerized planning approach under the City-County Planning Board. Alvin Clare Russie, a regional planner from Howard Needles Tammen Bergen, described Butte’s unique method as phase one of a comprehensive future development plan. Russie’s Des Moines firm is among the nation’s largest in professional planning.
Butte launches a citywide cleanup May 4 through 10 with Sam Reynolds leading the Civic Improvement Committee urging all residents to participate. Volunteers from the Anaconda Job Corps Center will help, while city and county crews collect debris from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on pickup day. Residents should prepare yards and vacant lots for curbside loading in boxes or containers.
Montana faces an unprecedented slate of gubernatorial candidates with ten filings, a historic count not seen since 1916. Among the contenders are six Democrats and four Republicans, including incumbent Gov Tim Babcock and Lt. Gov. Ted James, as campaigning heats up for a January 1969 term.
Warren A. McMillan Manhattan tavern owner and J. Wellington Fauver Helena secondhand store operator are named among Republican governors hopefuls. The Montana primary marks a rare four-way GOP field, with past candidates reappearing. Willard E. Fraser, Billings mayor, and Merrill K. Riddick, Philipsburg prospector, also previously ran in 1960.
