Dead Man's Curve Eliminated. Truck Crash Fatal
A truck driver from Birmingham Mich died at St James hospital after a bulldozer collision at the Dead Man's Curve on US 10 east of Butte. Gordon Jones aged 50 suffered a crushed chest and paralysis. Lloyd Ready 30 from Twin Bridges, bulldozer operator, was seriously injured. Harvey Witt 45 of Chicago sustained arm and leg injuries. The trio were taken to hospital after rescue at the scene and the crash occurred around 1 35 am during downhill travel as air brakes failed on the fruit truck.

Driver Guided Truck by Bus in Hill Crash Near Dead Man's Curve
Harvey Witt and Gordon Jones survived a runaway truck that plunged down an 18 mile grade near Dead Man's Curve. Witt, owner of the transport, leaped to safety while Jones steered around a bus and two cars ahead of the wreck. The truck collided with a Caterpillar bulldozer, injuring two others. Train Hits Auto, Six Children Die in Illinois Crash
Six home bound schoolchildren were killed when a passenger train struck their automobile near a school in CAMPUS Illinois. Driver Leo Kane also died. Coroner Vernon von Qualen identified the victims as George Frederick Johnson eight and Judith Kay nine among the children of local families. Kane ran a taxi service for students. The car was carried more than a mile by the northbound Wabash train. The crash occurred at an unguarded crossing near the school. All the other bodies were found tangled in the wreckage.
