Al Smith says he has put a chock under the bandwagon and cautions it is too early to judge what Tuesday's voting will do to stop Roosevelt's nomination. He spoke while discussing campaign effects and expectations.
Alfred E. Smith estimated about 76 Democratic national convention votes from Massachusetts and Pennsylvania primaries, suggesting a bandwagon impact. Roosevelt aides claimed 57 certain, 11 doubtful, 8 lost in Pennsylvania while Smith awaited broader returns and local results to gauge momentum.
In Honolulu on April 27 the trial of four white defendants charged with second degree murder of Joseph Kahahawali neared verdict as Clarence Darrow urged freedom while Prosecutor John Kelley pressed for 20 years to life. Judge Davis instructed the mixed jury on possible verdicts including second degree murder in the Kahahawai case linked to Mrs Thalia Fortescue Massie.

Senator J. W. Schnitzler and his pilot Al O. Hedberg died in a Malta air crash. Aeronautical inspector William A. Winston toured the wreck site in Butte but could not locate any witnesses. He noted that official statements would come from the secretary of commerce in Washington. The body of Schnitzler will be transported to Glendale for interment.
Miss Catherine Dougherty won first place in a Girls' Central high school declamation contest. Catherine Shepperd took second with Bonita Watson, Margaret Robbins, Selina Stanaway, Rose McNulty and Mary Flaherty the remaining seniors. Judges were Mrs. F. G. Kelleher Mrs. George S. Martin and Prof. W. T. Scott.
Washington April 27 opponents of a federal salary cut won a decisive victory as party leaders forced an adjournment to protect the omnibus economy bill. The measure reduces funding from 67 302 000 to 12 000 000 and contains a menacing assault from an unruly house, but was halted to prevent destruction of the legislation.
Robert Olin Young husband of former Anne Green Kremer died last evening in San Francisco as family headed there after receiving a message. The death follows a prior note that Mr Young had departed with his wife and in laws, the Kremer family, for the city.
D. C. Dave Salyerds of Helena, secretary for the Montana Automobile association, said in town that indications point to a banter year in tourism. He noted a rise in inquiries about road and highway conditions and possible detours along main routes as motorists plan trips this season.
The Butte district trustees voted to re employ the entire teaching staff for the next year while approving salary reductions of 15 to 20 percent based on ranges. The changes reduce annual district costs from 499 955 to 440 285 42 and save about 59 770 yearly. Managers cite reduced tax revenue and expect further cuts. A full list of teachers remains on page 4.
Lima report notes morning papers bitterly criticize the American senate finance committee decision to include copper imports in the tariff bill. One paper says the move harms exporters like Peru and contradicts Pan American spirit the United States touts in South American relations.
Senator Thomas J. Walsh of Montana arrived in Havana by airplane for a brief vacation. The trip was announced from Havana on April 27.
In Deer Lodge on April 27 a magician named Howa drew two child volunteers from the audience, Bobby Larabe 6 and Mary Harpole 7. Bobby tossed an egg toward a red handkerchief but it splattered on a spectator instead, while the crowd laughed and the magician apologized.
President Hoover urged a redistribution of taxation and reductions in federal state and local expenditures with balanced budgets as the path to national recovery. He called for intelligent public support and warned against vested interests opposing reform. Governor Roosevelt praised the speech and shook Hoover’s hand. Governor Ritchie welcomed Hoover but critiqued his grouping of states.
Clara Bow, the red haired star, signed with Fox to return to movies and start work on a film titled Call Her Savage from Tiffany Thayer. No leading man or director is set yet. Bow had retired six months earlier after personal troubles and a breakdown, following her departure from Paramount and a Nevada ranch stay with Rex Bell, whom she later married.
Thursday and Friday in Montana expect generally fair skies with little change in temperatures. Mild conditions continue with no significant precipitation anticipated.

Howard Edwards of Newark A city hospital patient after taking sleeping powder. Doctors say he is very much improved but will need ongoing wakefulness as attendants walked him through the night and day. Relays kept him moving to counter sleepiness. Medical staff cannot estimate when the effects will pass.
Hundreds attend the funeral for Jack Rochester a popular Montana university student fatally injured in a Sunday automobile crash near Polson. The service at St Patrick's church in Butte was led by Father with Mass celebrated by a local priest. The crowd included mourners from Butte Anaconda Missoula and nearby towns. The casket was buried in St Patrick's cemetery surrounded by flowers.
