American air force with over 1,000 planes struck Brunswick and other targets in Germany and occupied territory, the raid reaching a twelfth day with no bomber losses or enemy fighter contact. Heavy bombardment dropped 1500 tons of bombs as fighter escorts reported no encounters.
Washington reports broad changes to selective service mandating occupational deferments for men deemed making a war contribution. The policy introduces 2-A to 2-C classifications with (F) marks and (H) for over age 37, reopening cases every six months.
Chicago reports reveal government seizure of Montgomery Ward units after CEO Sewell Avery resisted a presidential order. Wayne Taylor announced takeover by the Commerce Department with 32 military police present as Avery left the premises agreeing business would continue. The standoff ended with Avery capitulating after hours of defiance.
British carrier aircraft attacked a German convoy off Bodo in northern Norway. Four ships and an escort vessel were hit, with Berlin reporting 25 to 30 planes taking part and nine destroyed. Further details awaited.
Moscow announced that in the past 24 hours Russians sunk five German and Romanian transports and damaged two others near Sevastopol. In the Barents Sea four transports totaling 20,000 tons were sunk, with nine transports totaling 33,000 tons sunk in two naval air clashes.
In Cairo on April 26 a new Greek government under George Papandreou was sworn in. Papandreou, leader of the Socialist Democratic party, arrived from Greece and was named premier and minister of foreign affairs. Other ministerial posts to be filled by acting directors general. Papandreou had condemned ongoing internal divisions as harmful to the people.
Japanese jungle troops press against Allied road blocks in central Burma and perish in droves as they assault rails roads and rivers. Allied air forces under Col. Philip Cochran support ground troops with gliders and planes, with heavy artillery and minefields aiding the defense. Continued on page 3.
U S Pacific Fleet reports dawn raids from Pearl Harbor on Monday night target Paramushiro and Shumushu in the Kuriles and a 36 ton bombing on Truk atoll in the Caroline Islands. Liberators hit Ponape and other targets as part of a continuing chain of air strikes against Japanese outposts.
Reports from Malmo and Stockholm indicate large German troop and air forces are entering Denmark as Denmark’s siege tightens. Sabotage rises in Copenhagen with arrests and executions reported. Telegraph and ferry links to Sweden disrupted.

Lt Gen George C Kenney announced the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to T Sgt John H Fitsimmons of Sarpy Montana in the Southwest Pacific theater on April 24.
Butte residents urged to join a salvage campaign for waste paper to avert a state wide shortage. E J Keeley executive secretary of the state salvage committee said the need is greater now than any single salvage commodity since the war began. He called on households to bring scrap paper to schools on Friday to aid mills and keep operations running.
U S Sixth Army seized two Hollandia airfields and closed on a third as Australian forces took the Madang base with its airstrip. American troops moved from Tadji toward Aitape Village, while Cyclops and Sentani airfields near Lake Sentani were secured. About 100 Japanese were killed as the Hollandia operation advanced amid swampy terrain and jungle.
Stanford University President Tresidder announced that all sororities are banned by action of the board of trustees. The move unifies housing and plans equitable compensation for sorority property rights as part of a broader effort to reduce disruption to academics.
