The AP reports Britain’s night bombing of the German battler ships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in Brest may remove them from the Atlantic fight, with questions over whether mechanical failure or undisclosed damage kept them there.
Axis troops outside Tobruk were shelled and scattered by the fortress garrison. British patrols and artillery intensified around Salam as the Axis advance stalled. Royal Air Force fighters claimed eight Axis planes shot down at Tobruk this week, bringing the toll to 44. Benghazi bombing sparked fires along an Axis convoy near El Argub.
Montana Power’s Butte division announces new lower rates saving $90,000 yearly for residents and businesses in Butte and nearby towns. Residential minimum falls to 75 cents and top-step kWh price drops to 4.5 cents, with a one-cent rate for water heating. Eaton Lockhart of Missoula was elected president of the Montana State De Molay association at the closing session. Dale Stripp of Billings was named vice president and John Airey of Whitefish corresponding secretary. The 1942 conclave will be held in Butte.

About 200 students perform in mixed chorus, glee clubs, choir, double quartet, madrigal singers and alumnae players. The operetta An Episode in the Life of Mozart accompanies National Music Week which begins May 4 and ties to the Anaconda Music Festival on May 10.
