United Press reports two parallel murder scenes within 24 hours in South Paris Maine and Stratford Connecticut. An elderly, prosperous man is killed in each community while a slender young woman, over 30, remains in custody as investigators weigh natural causes against foul play.
United States Department of Commerce weekly business bulletin notes gains in steel and lumber production and freight-car loadings versus both prior week and 1927. Petroleum declined from the prior week but remained above 1928 levels. coal rose. Wholesale prices fell again in the week ending April 20.
A wide tornadic outbreak across Southern Georgia and into South Carolina on April 25 26 left 72 dead and about 500 injured with extensive property damage in a rural belt. Georgia alone reported 67 fatalities as three tornadoes struck scattered towns from Cochran northeast into South Carolina, with night losses highest and relief efforts ongoing.
A special district No 1 school trustees meeting is called for Monday to reconsider retaining two elementary teachers, to debate forcing the city superintendent to resign over his teacher recommendations, and to discuss ability to discharge a high school teacher or demote a principal without charges. Professor A H Douglass said a Women’s party committee urged his resignation after he withdrew a recommendation to drop one teacher.
Philadelphia report says Mrs Ellsworth Semple, 27, was kidnapped by three men who forced her into the Crescentville Bank and Trust with a note demanding $5,000 or the bank would be blown up. She fainted inside the bank as the note clutched in her hand.
Harold Dinty Moore 35 head mechanic for the Symons store died at St James hospital from injuries after a car crash on Rowe road near Dewey street. He was thrown through the windshield when the vehicle overturned into a four foot embankment after running off the pavement. The accident occurred shortly after midnight while he was traveling from the Country club toward Butte. Investigators believe he turned too far to avoid an oncoming car with bright headlights.
Mrs Anna Merrill Welch 26 sits silently in the county jail after the medical examiner declares Turner 75 the victim of a brutal killing. The mother of a five month old girl says Turner was her child's father and reports a violent quarrel preceded the death.
Marion Talley, 19, plans to live near New York's Gotham Studios and bring her farm eggs to town. The Kansas City soprano, famed as a young prima donna, will pursue music while tending cows and chickens, exchanging eggs for groceries as she returns to a simpler life.
A total of 357 boys from 21 schools have been weighed for the Butte grammar school track and field meet to be held at Clark Park May 10 and 11. Plans, led by Ben Hardin of the Y and the Butte Exchange club, anticipate up to 500 entrants as six schools yet to submit names. Coaches from Exchange club members across 27 schools predict many records will fall as warm weather boosts practice. All weigh ins must be completed by April 29.
Alfred Aloysius Smith known as Trader Horn lands in Los Angeles from Honolulu with plans to publish an Atlantic story and a book of poetry. He says his poetry will be great for a motion picture while revealing illness and a life of travel and adventure.
In Washington on April 26 the administration faced a Democratic attack over dropping the debenture provision from the farm relief bill. Senator Robinson Arkansas leader demanded to know if Watson Indiana and Senator McNary Oregon plan to back the equalization fee or the debenture in amendment form.
Jack Mead aged 23 is in serious condition at St James hospital after being struck near the Timber Butte Mill last night. Driver Frank McQuiston 28 took Mead to hospital reporting the accident as he and John Sullivan 219 B East Platinum street faced blinding headlights and Mead walked into the auto.
Steve Joseph, owner of a Cleveland confectionery, reported a passer attempting to deposit a comical check form. The form bore a mock warning and was part of a circulation of similar pieces. The passer was held in jail for investigation.
The Montana highway commission awarded two contracts to L. T. Lawler of Butte totaling 218666.22 for grading and drainage on two linking projects forming a new 29 mile highway between Nissler and Melrose. Lawler said work will start within two weeks and finish late in September or early October.
