Vice President Spiro Agnew voiced full confidence in President Nixon's integrity and ability to resolve the Watergate matter, while acknowledging that some rumors may later be substantiated. He spoke briefly in the White House area, defending the president and declining to answer questions.
Gov. Tom Judge spoke at the dedication of the Port of Butte warehouse in the Industrial Park calling it a window on the world and a new era for international commerce. He cited benefits for Southwest Montana and the chance for Butte to become a regional transportation hub through containerized freight.
Trustees vote to seek 52.02 elementary and 7.23 high school mills totaling 59.25, a rise from last year though the overall levy base falls as state financing shifts. The district will receive more state aid while taxpayers gain more control over allocations, with a net 2.31 mill decrease in next year’s budget.

Seniority based step increases, written contracts for all certified staff, and protections for displaced federal program workers were included.
U S Customs Commissioner Vernon Acree told 300 at the Butte Country Club that the Port of Butte, the nation’s first inland freight distribution center, could add two warehouse facilities within a year. He highlighted rail, air, and highway access and potential growth in export agricultural products.
The Census Bureau announced a 5.3 million undercount in the 1970 census, about 7.7 percent of the black population and 1.9 percent of whites. The undercount totals 2.5 percent of the 203.2 million residential population, with higher risk in inner city areas where blacks concentrate.
County commissioners opened bids on the $1.5 million nursing home project on Wednesday and face two issues. County Attorney Larry Stimatz must rule whether a single electrical bid can be accepted, in contrast to Montana policy requiring two bids to open. Architect Jerry Aanes says federal practice allows a lone bid if properly advertised. A Stimatz ruling is expected soon to decide if the electrical contract must be readvertised.
