The House approved a two year extension of subsidies for not growing surplus feed grains by a 208 196 margin on final passage amid party pressure. The vote followed a failed GOP bid to delay the bill and now moves to the Senate where approval is expected. The measure aims to influence a May referendum on the president’s wheat program and supply management policy.
Neutralists and Pathet Lao accused each other of renewed attacks on the Plain of Jars, violating a cease-fire as the United States sought to stabilize Laos. Harriman flew to Moscow to urge Khrushchev to help end the crisis while Thailand welcomed U.S. troops for SEATO drills. A senior neutralist police officer reported heavy shelling at Lat Hoang late Wednesday night.
Eighteen North Vietnamese air control technicians did not leave the Plain of Jars as scheduled Thursday at the crossroads between the Plain of Jars airfield and Xieng Khouang. The International Control Commission reported one of its planes.
Montana governors moves to examine requests from about 20 counties for Dan Fulton to resign as chairman of the State Board of Equalization. Gov. Tim Babcock, back from vacation, said he would analyze the resolutions and weigh ouster as county officials urge changes amid property classification disputes. Some counties also call for board member John Alley to resign. actions span Billings, Glasgow, Havre, Helena and Missoula.
Plumbers and heating contractors from Montana gather in Butte for the 15th annual Montana Plumbing Convention hosted by the Associated Plumbing and Heating Contractors of Montana. The event runs Friday and Saturday at the Finlen Hotel with speakers from Arizona Portland Washington Idaho and national leaders.
A preliminary meeting for the 15th annual Montana X ray Technicians convention gathers at 8 p.m. in St James Community Hospital with Alyce Duncan moderating a panel on proposals. The convention begins Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Finlen Hotel with Guy Copeman delivering the opening address. Dr. L G Hammer will speak at the Saturday banquet. officers will be elected and breakfast held Sunday.
State Sen. Dave Manning, acting governor for three weeks, said he would run for governor in 1964 if backers support him. The 66 year old Treasure County Democrat, longtime Taxation Committee chair, left open whether he would give up a seventh Senate term for the race. He noted a dozen Democrats might seek the nomination. Manning, Hysham contractor, had filled in for Gov. Tim Babcock since April 3 during Babcock’s vacation and business trip.
Washington report notes Khrushchev offered little sign of interest in the revised Western proposal on inspection limits for a nuclear test ban. The United States will persist in seeking a solution to break the dead center in talks, despite Moscow’s stance.
Fourteen schools attend the two day District 4 music meet with 840 plus participants in solo ensemble and large group events. Only groups earning superior ratings advance to the state meet in Missoula May 10 11. Local officials oversee the events with Ray Sims as chair and solo contest Friday while bands and large groups compete Saturday in the Butte High School auditorium.

District No 4 hosts a major music meet with 800 plus students at Butte High School. Calanthe Lodge hosts Pythians convention Saturday and Sunday, and the Montana Association of Nurse Anesthetists opens its state convention Saturday.
A fast moving blaze erupted on an open Davidson Grocery Co. truck about 80 miles north of Dillon. The driver Ed P. Guidi escaped with slight damage to the vehicle while a quantity of groceries burned. Bob Becker, a Butte pharmacist, alerted firefighters and fetched aid, then photographed the scene.
