President Nixon reportedly told aide John Dean he remains counsel and cheerful during a call from Key Biscayne Florida about White House legal matters not tied to Watergate. Sources say the significance is unclear as officials dispute the call and grand jurors pursue testimony. Indictments unlikely this week while CREP turns over campaign records to court.
Community members clashed Monday night as opponents and proponents debated a Tech complex project. The meeting at the town hall drew residents, a council member, and city officials amid questions on costs and impact.

Congressman Dick Shoup made a rapid visit to Butte outlining housing aid gains of 3.8 million dollars for projects including 138 units at Columbus Plaza and 2.1 million for public housing. He urged general revenue sharing for closed end programs and backed the Better Communities Act to let local governments direct housing and social needs. The Pentagon health chief estimated 2,000 to 3,000 former Army enlisted veterans who served in Vietnam during 1970-71 remain dependent on drugs. Dr. Richard S. Wilbur noted this is far below earlier alarming figures of up to 200,000 addicts among Vietnam veterans. The projection derives from a government study of about 900 veterans who returned in September 1971.
Timothy Leary, 42, is ordered to serve six months to five years for escaping the California Men’s Colony, to run consecutively with a marijuana possession sentence. Judge Harris denied bail. Leary would go to Folsom State Prison. He faced charges in California, Texas and New York.
The Agriculture Department reports a 3.5 percent rise in the market basket cost to 1,458 dollars for March, driven by a 6.8 percent jump in prices farmers receive. The basket, covering food for a theoretical 3.2 person year, shows gains in January and February as well. Farmers led the increase with higher proceeds. middlemen also profited.
