U S Rejects Soviet Laos Blame Amid Fighting Resurgence
The United States rejected Soviet charges that it caused renewed Laos fighting. State Department officials said responsibility lay with the Pathet Lao after their early April attack on Kong Le forces. The U S urged Pathet Lao withdrawal from contested areas and access for international inspectors to Laos as per the Geneva accord.

Butte Engineer Hawke Honored With Carnegie Medal
Kenneth L. Hawke 43 superintendent and Theodore Smith 36 received Carnegie medals for rescuing five crewmen from a scow in Michigan City Harbor during a May 1961 gale. William R. Bennett 45 of Butte earned a bronze and $500 for saving 2½ year old Mark Erickson from an oncoming train near a railroad yard on June 22, 1962. Bennett leaped onto ballast, tackled the boy just feet from the engine, and pulled him to safety as the train passed. Bennett also named Railroad Engineer of the Year. Hawke and Smith among 25 honored that day. total awards $12,400.
