The Berlin radio said 12 British planes attacked the Swiss steamer Chanseral off the southern French coast Saturday afternoon with bombs and machine gun fire, killing one Swiss sailor and wounding five. The Germans alternated between saying it sank and that it was salvaged by small German ships, with no Allied confirmation.
Allied invasion planes of fighters to heavy bombers attacked in force from the south and west, targeting Austria and Hungarian air centers near Vienna and rail hubs in Belgium France and Germany. American and British air forces reported thousands of sorties and tens of thousands of tons of bombs dropped in the week-long offensive.

He outlines four stages of the Japanese war effort and emphasizes American progress and planned offensives.
Seattle April 23. An Alaska bound Liberty ship the John Straub broke her back 21 miles off Sanak Island Alaska. Of her 80 crew 65 were presumed lost. E M Murphy superintendent of Alaska Steamship Co said the ship was new and on its third voyage. Initial reports spoke of fire and explosions but coast guardsmen found no evidence of fire.
Edmund Schulthess, 76, former president of Switzerland and a leader in federal old age insurance development, died Saturday in Bern. He held the presidency in 1917 1921 1928 and 1933.
Major Paul G Hollister of Montana led the first assault unit at Humboldt Bay with Captain James H Kindt of San Francisco. Hollister, a Buna and Salamaua veteran, won the silver star at Buna. Kindt saw action at Salamaua and Papuan campaigns. Japanese breakfast had been prepared for the invasion at Hollandia.
American forces land at Hollandia and advance inland past the beachheads in an amphibious strike that bypassed much of the Japanese 18th Army. The move opens a lengthy campaign, destroys the Dutch outpost defenses, and traps Japanese forces on surrounding coasts, with air and naval power delivering decisive blows.
Thousands of homeless receive Red Cross aid across Missouri and Kansas as rivers rise and roads flood. evacuees exceed 200 along Kansas City’s Blue River and 1000 in Wichita while amphibious units assist rescue efforts.
At Pearl Harbor on April 23 Admiral Chester W. Nimitz and General Douglas MacArthur joined in the first cooperative Pacific offensive. Carrier aircraft struck along the northern New Guinea coast and Hurled attacks toward the Hollandia Humboldt Bay area as troops prepared to land. The fleet-supplied air assaults came within about 1200 miles of the Philippines as preparations for ground assaults continued.
Two Medal of Honor recipients Sgt. Charles E. Kelly of Pittsburgh and Second Lt. Ernest Childers of Tulsa will share their combat stories at a Pentagon press conference Monday. The War Department kept their Sunday location undisclosed but hinted it is closer than Italy.
