Board of Inquiry says seven deaths could have been prevented as two storm incidents claim lives of convicts. Surviving officials review safety measures and weather impacts on prison work details.
Outside Columbus 1600 convicts defy guards to keep doors locked after Monday fire. In Columbus a board of inquiry heard sensational charges that officials could have saved 318 prisoners and others questioned fire precautions and life safety at the Ohio penitentiary.
Four people were killed and two burned seriously when their car collided with a Southern Pacific switch engine on the Pacific highway near Canby Oregon. Victims were Herman Anthony J W Evans and wife Trene Evans eight. The injured Maude Anthony and Hugh Evans suffered first degree burns as flames consumed the car. Witnesses said the engine stood on the highway crossing and heavy rain may have blinded the driver.
The Northwest centers on Twin Cities and condemns the nine foot waterway bill as discriminatory. It notes authorization of Oswego and Erie canals in New York and deeper Illinois river, while ignoring a full nine foot channel on the upper Mississippi. Business leaders say transportation restrictions have long hampered the region.
A 34 year old laborer in Linn Missouri is jailed on murder charges for aiding Dr Andrew J Bass in moving the body of William Pearman from Missouri toward Gravette Arkansas. Tillman says he fired two bullets to bolster the hoax and burned Pearman’s luggage after removal.
The forecast for Montana calls for Thursday and Friday to be partly cloudy and warmer, with the extreme northeast portion experiencing the warm-up on Thursday.

John Keel a 55 year old ex convict and Powell county ranch worker faces a murder charge after the fatal shooting of James Lawson Taylor 48 at the Elkhorn hotel Deer Lodge during a quarrel that followed a card game in the lobby. Mrs ATace Gillivu sister of the slain man told officers Keel joined a friendly game last night and after Paul Coleman spoke Keel struck him then fired at Taylor as he objected to the incident. Objects and statements from witnesses described the sequence leading to the early morning shooting at 7 15.
The Chicago crime commission delivered a list naming the citys leading gangsters to the police urging immediate arrests and actions, even lethal measures if needed. Frank J Loesch said the roll call titled All for Al and Al for all places Capone at the top of the list, with the document continuing on page 2.
Harry Hoffner will represent Butte high at the Montana Interscholastic Extemporaneous Speaking contest in Bozeman, May 1. Hoffner finished third in the mining district contest and was chosen to represent Butte, with Tom Lally and Gladys LaPittes also invited to compete for the mining district.
Washington April 23 The senate and house conferees reached an agreement on the tariff bill but eight major points remain unsettled and will go back to Congress for final action. Key issues include sugar rate increases export debentures and a modified flexible tariff provision with further votes likely on cement lumber shingles and silver rates and the tariff commission reorganization. The dispute foreseen on the floors could prompt White House input and a possible initial action by the house.
A Montana Social Welfare conference dinner features a program of speeches and business talks. Dr Curtis L Wilson chairs as Dr S Sternheim Miss Haseltyne Byrd Prof H T High Newell D Edson and Mrs S Morse speak on social work and funded services. Some officials could not attend.
ASA Lee Lakely Jr., six, wandered three days and nights on Mount Burney after his parents stopped their car on the grade. He was found under a homemade bough shelter, huddled for warmth. Over 200 volunteers searched with torches and flashlights, following faint footprints and torn blouse fragments.
Twenty year old Anna Keipp shot her father 43 year old Philip Keipp while he slept after a series of family quarrels culminated when he ordered his wife from the house and reportedly used a revolver to enforce the edict.

Anaconda April 23 A 50 year old electrician Michael J Joyce ended his life by walking into Hafners dam lake west of the city after an argument with a woman hiker who tickled his nose with a twig and took his whiskey Joyce told two onlookers the watery grave would benefit him Sheriff C W Smith and Under sheriff E FE Peck found his body in the lake shortly before six oclock
Sixty Spanish war veterans renewed the oath of allegiance at Patriotic hall near the courthouse. The annual ceremony recalls the 1898 call to volunteer issued by President McKinley. Judge Jeremiah J. Lynch delivered the keynote, praising the Maine sinking and urging a strong merchant marine to unite the North and South again.
