Astronauts Duke and Young drove about six miles on the Descartes Moon, reaching a peak on Stone Mountain. They found only a handful of crystalline rocks thought to be volcanic, puzzling Earth scientists while reporting a spectacular view and a seven hour thirty minute excursion.
John Fairfax and Sylvia Cook completed a year long solo journey across the Pacific in their 35 foot Britannia I arriving at Hayman Island near Brisbane. They endured four cyclones and a shark attack. Both are British and plan no marriage. He previously rowed the Atlantic in six months. They flew to Brisbane after the voyage.
A Butte High School teacher set the pace for the Walk for Mankind in Butte on Saturday. Ed Foley completed the 22 mile course in three hours and a half, running the entire way. About 850 people had finished by 5 30 p.m. with 1 200 to 1 300 starting at 8 a.m. Funds raised are estimated at 25 000 with 20 percent going to Silver Bow General Hospital and 10 percent staying in Butte for a local project. the rest benefits Project Concern. The route ran from Leonard Field to 9 Mile and back, with early checkpoints and first aid stations. Mayor Mike Micone joined part of the trek.
Senators Hubert H. Humphrey and George S. McGovern aim to weaken Edmund Muskie in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts as Muskie seeks to win delegates. Humphrey needs a Pennsylvania victory to stay viable while McGovern hopes to grab ballots and delegates in Massachusetts and beyond.
At the Democratic convention the first ballot signals Nixon’s expected victory in Massachusetts. Pennsylvania lacks a GOP primary this year but results there loom over May primaries in Ohio Indiana Michigan and the June contests in California and New York. McGovern eyes a delegate lead. Muskie labors with funding and bases in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Billings spelling bee results headline Montana’s state coverage with two 13 year olds from the same school sweeping top honors.
Gov. Forrest H. Anderson and 36 officials returned from a three day recruiting trip to Los Angeles and San Francisco. They visited 106 firms with many showing interest in relocating or opening branches in Montana. Firms ranged from a boat winch producer to an alfalfa to kitty litter converter. A clothing firm cited workforce availability as a concern but was assured by state spokesmen it could be met. Anderson spoke at business luncheons offering state help to attract quality development.
The Butte area reports fair skies and warmer conditions with an outlook of about 50 degrees by day and 22 by night. More details on Page 14.
Basin residents favor a four lane Interstate 15 route via Basin to Butte, arguing it would speed travel and boost the town. They weigh the Basin and Nez Perce options against the Whitetail plan while the Montana Highway Commission reevaluates after years of studies and debate.
