In a daylight raid Monday, Admiral Nimitz said a force of Army and Navy heavy bombers attacked Saipan and Tinian, the first land based assault on the Marianas. Liberators battled escorts through enemy fighters and bombed the islands as forces also planted the Stars and Stripes on Erikub and Aur in the Marshalls. About 25 Japanese fighters engaged the raiders, with one downed and another possibly destroyed. results of the bombing were not announced.
