A 23 warship strike group led by three aircraft carriers, Task Force 71, began moving Monday into the Sea of Japan to back up President Nixon amid threats to protect American reconnaissance flights off the North Korean coast after North Korean jets downed a craft last week.
Pentagon officials say the aircraft carrier Hornet with Oga and Ranger, three cruisers and 16 destroyers forms a task force far larger than needed for air cover. The force aims to deter North Korean anti-air and anti-submarine actions and enable retaliatory raids if reconnaissance planes or ships are attacked. The Air Force lists 128 jets in Korea and 50 in Japan with no new additions since the Navy plane loss.
President Nixon urged Congress to cut the income tax surcharge for two million low income families, halve the surcharge for individuals and corporations, repeal the investment tax credit, and ensure some tax paid by most affluent Americans. The plan aims for a five percent top rate next year.
Lincoln Vaughan pleaded guilty in police court to selling intoxicants to a minor at a Utah Avenue tavern where he tended Saturday night. Judge Seton fined him 300 dollars or 30 days, plus an additional 15 day jail term. Officers offered a pint of whisky and three fifths of wine as evidence. The tavern operator was not charged. The juvenile, about 18, is free under bond and charged with illegal possession of spirits.
More than 150 patients from Warm Springs State Hospital begin moving to newly built quarters at Boulder River State School. RMARC led the eight year push with Steve Chiavaro supervising the transfers, ten or more moving weekly to free up space and offer education and potential mobility.
Butte district voters will decide in a special election on May 10 whether to authorize a 36 mill levy for next year. The package combines 28 mills for elementary operation and 3 mills for high school, with plans to rent St John School, add 50 teachers, and build a Hillcrest Addition to accommodate more than 850 parochial students. Polls run noon to 8 pm for taxpayers only.
The Associated Press reports nine people died on Montana streets and highways during the nonholiday weekend. Officials link warmer weather and faster driving to higher fatalities, noting the weekend total neared the state record. Through the period the statewide death toll reached 66, ahead of 1967 and 1968 tallies.

Lawyers pressed for life imprisonment over death for Sirhan Bishara Sirhan in the Kennedy assassination trial. Defense argued mental impairment and sought parole eligibility, while prosecutors urged death as the appropriate punishment. Judge Walker instructed jurors on sentencing and parole not to influence the verdict.
