Fire raced through a 76 year old building at Da kota and Galena streets. Officers and firefighters evacuated ten tenants aged 70 to 88 from two upper floors while Asst. Fire Chief Duffy suffered a minor fall. The Brown company faced losses estimated over 50 thousand dollars with much insured.
William Arthur Vine head of the mining engineering department at Montana Tech died in a local hospital on his 55th birthday after a three week illness. Native of Crandon Wisconsin he was born April 21 1911 and educated at Wisconsin University Platteville and Columbia.
Surgeons in Houston implanted a new artificial heart in a man as his damaged heart was rescued. The operation was conducted Thursday with hopes for a successful recovery as the patient awaits the next critical hours.
Cash and jewelry valued at about $1,500 were taken from the John Kelly home at 9 E. La Platte. Kelly was said to be away celebrating his birthday. entry was made through a front window. About $750 in small bills and other items were missing along with watches and cuff links.
Fire Chief Jack McCarthy saved assistant chief William Duffy during the Brown's Auto Parts Store blaze on Da kota and Galena. Smoke-choked stairways and water-filled basement hampered crews as Duffy fell 15 feet while navigating flames, but McCarthy guided him to safety with calm commands and a quick rescue.
State PTA sessions in Anaconda open with about 400 expected. Registration at Marcus Daly Hotel followed by a coffee hour. Friday features a breakfast honoring life members and a program on Education Grows With 50 Years of PTA.
The Accelerated Butte Community Development steering committee and allied groups support Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology seeking authorization to grant six additional bachelor of science degrees in chemistry physics geology mathematics geophysics and geological engineering hydrogeology. The panel forwards its resolution to Gov. Babcock state board of education and university regents.

Butte will host the 1966 Holiday on Ice pre season rehearsal period at the Civic Center for about three weeks from roughly July 10 to August 6. The $200,000 project will bring 125 performers and 175 staff, plus housing, transport, and meals, with Silver Bow County receiving a $4,000 rental. Bagdad Temple sponsors the event, led by Ralph Beck and Richard Nicon, and Al Olsen of Butte represents Holiday's management in negotiating with county officials.

Butte will observe standard time in public and parochial schools while MT Tech will switch to daylight time on Monday. Trustees and school officials said the district will align with city DST policy, with the Diocese of Helena elementary schools joining the public schools in standard time observance. The May term ends late, and trustees noted the DST adoption followed PTA requests and Superintendent Charles Davis’s recommendation to keep standard time.
The Anaconda Co announced changes to DST affecting Butte and Anaconda operations including 10 am changes for mines and plants in Butte, midnight change at Anaconda smelter, and midnight for the extractive metallurgical research division. BA&P railroad will align, with shifts adjusted until Oct 30. Davis notes school schedules stay on standard time. students must remember DST clock changes.
