The IRS recommended that millions of Americans increase federal tax withholdings from their 1971 paychecks. Changes from the 1969 Tax Reform Act reduced withholding for some, risking large add on amounts due next April. The agency advised arranging extra withholding with employers using provided information.
Superior Judge Charles H. Older formalized the death sentence for Charles Manson and three women followers in the Sharon Tate case after denying motions for a new trial and sentence reduction. The jury convicted them of murder conspiracy, and Tate was killed in the killings described as seven senseless murders.
The Soviet Union began a complex space mission with the Salute, an unmanned craft intended to form part of an orbital scientific station network. It completed nine orbits and officials say systems function normally as Moscow hints at further spacecraft and joint maneuvers.
The Anaconda Company shifts its position and will donate a proposed school site on the old Duggan Memorial baseball field east of East Junior High. Allen McKenzie, ex Butte school trustee, revealed the change at a meeting, noting concerns about future mining operations affecting nearby housing. A new elementary school is planned on the same lot east of Whittier, funded in part by a $750,000 School District 1 sale.
Helicopter crew spotted the shattered Lear executive jet wreckage on a ridge 14 miles from Butte, killing four men including L M Sheridan 55, his son 25, insurer Carl Daniel 47, and attorney James Anderson 30. The aircraft was missing since Saturday and was found as search teams cordoned the area for investigation.

Two U S congressmen from the House Foreign Affairs Committee reported that 10 to 15 percent of U S troops in Vietnam, about 30,000 to 40,000 men, used high grade heroin with epidemic addiction.
