Governor Ford urges home gardens as a remedy for severe food shortages. He says produce from home gardens could bolster the national supply, improve living standards for gardeners, and help reduce high food costs amid scarce commodities.
The U S weather bureau reports rain fell Sunday in dry areas east and south of the state, with showers Monday. Broadwater, Miles City, Livingston, Billings and other towns logged measurable rain while western Montana saw clearing skies. The forecast predicts fair weather Tuesday west of the Divide. Bozeman reports farmers backed two soil conservation districts and approved additions to three others, totaling 51,603,445 acres. May 1 sets Powder River vote. May 22 Park county proceeding. other districts under consideration include Lewis and Clark.
Northwest Airlines asks the Civil Aeronautics Board to lift limits on carrying passengers between Great Falls and Kalispell and other Montana cities. Traffic manager H L Gummings said the carrier seeks an exemption to allow Billings to Great Falls flights until a final ruling on restrictions is made. The airline currently can’t pick up or discharge passengers on routes to Billings Bozeman Butte Helena, and seeks service to Kalispell on flights to Bozeman Butte Helena or Missoula.
Funeral services were held for a pioneer physician who died of a heart ailment after nearly 40 years of practice. Burial will follow Tuesday at Custer Battlefield National Cemetery with honorary honors by veterans groups and Masons. Survivors include his widow, a son and a daughter.
MISSOULA April 19 district manager Frank Gleland of American Crystal Sugar says 208 Texans are arriving for work in western Montana beet fields. Planting is complete in about 700 acres scattered across Bitter Root Townsend Molesei and Missoula areas. More than 5,000 acres have already been constructed.
MELENA April 168 State income tax inflections for 1947 total about 500 000 more than in 1948. Montana equalization board clerks still have a half fall of mailed returns to check early Monday. As of Friday one day after the filing deadline tabulators counted 1 890 153 comparing 1 408 000 at end of April 1948. Office workers expect 1947 total by Wednesday. FILES FOR JUDGESHIP HELENA April 19 Cascade County Attorney Truman G Bradford became a candidate for district judge in Cascade and Chouteau counties. He filed a nominating petition, opposing Great Falls City Judge Davis J Ryan, the only other candidate so far for Montana’s July 20 primary.
New York April 10 Kathleen Winsor author of Forever Amber announced she would divorce Bandleader Artie Ghaw. This would be her fifth divorce. Other ex wives include Dana Turner Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Kern daughter of Jerome Kern.
A C M Club Show in the Crystal room at 8 30 features old time music and two Butte musicians Bob O Keefe 73 and Terry Lonam 78 with piano fiddle and violin pieces from late 19th and early 20th century. Gay Nineties singers from Girls Central high school with John Davies contribute to a community songfest. Other acts include Darleen Lolitha Virginia Meyreide Audrey Eggebrecht and Major Bram Gleager with instrument solos. Master of ceremonies Jim Chathan directs the program. accompanists Mrs Pearl Littlejohn and Wither Yorath assist.
Rook Springs Wyn April 19 Miners at the Union Pacific Coal company mine at Retintice north of here walked off their jobs Monday shortly after the conviction for John L Lewis for contempt.

Thomas Farrar and Esther Junger visit Frank Paniska on West Broadway en route to Pacific coast routes. Marine Corps League meets Tuesday at the recruiting office. Pfc. Charles Kirk leaves for Keesler Field for radar training. Marriage license issued to Alert Stomach and Eva Presevich.
In Fossil Oregon on April 19 a potato farmer William Beasley of Spray was nearly scalped after an airplane bumped his seat. Pilot Frank Cofmann, 38, pleaded guilty to assault and paid a fine of 1400. Beasley was treated at John Day hospital for scalp lacerations and stitches.
Powell County Gun club hosts a title match with Butte Gun club members Tuesday evening at 7:15 at the local target building. Two teams from each club compete in a 10-shot event from three positions prone sitting and off-hand. Public invited to witness.
Joyce Parton, a high school student from Deer Lodge, placed first in the violin solo and ensemble festival at the University of Missoula. Bob Korn finished second in the same section. Only five Deer Lodge musicians made the top brackets.
Tenure Farmers of America members from Powell County High School gathered in Deer Lodge on Monday to clean the school yard and adjoining grounds, including the Future Farmer building and gymnasium grounds, in full force.
Two college youths Albert White of Chillicothe Ohio and Dr Roy Walford of San Diego California quit after three days at the roulette wheels estimating they earned about 19 an hour during 13 hours of play. They claimed to have won about 12 000 last year in Reno using a secret system.
The Emerson school orchestra will entertain Butte Pioneers ciia members at their regular meeting Tuesday night in the Pioneers hall starting at 8. Miss Bess Stone directs the grade school group. New members to be initiated include Mrs Marrella Schoenteber Paul Madstone Charles Barnes Daisy Barnes and Palmer Schoenteber. A dance at the club hall on April 30 is planned.

George Burshia a Great Northern section hand is in St James hospital for an infected hand after a bunk car fight in the rail yard Thursday night. Burshia received a $15 fine in police court the next day. William Nacel another Great Northern section worker was in St James hospital for serious facial injuries and was released Saturday morning.
Washington April 1 subcommittees approved 38 flood control and harbor projects totaling about 36 million dollars in estimated first costs. The action moves forward in the advance of broader infrastructure funding and networked harbor improvements.
James B Harrington Los Angeles attorney spent the weekend visiting his mother Mrs Richard Harrington and brother in law Mr and Mrs John Ely at 410 Placer. He planned travel Monday to Itlings and would return home Wednesday via Denver.
