President Charles de Gaulle rests in hospital after secrecy obscured prostate surgery. A bulletin calls his condition very satisfactory as officials assure continuity of government and outline a 10 day hospital stay plus further convalescence at Colombey.
Three Minnesota men fishing for agates in Montana set out on the Yellowstone River in three rubber rafts. The craft broke apart at an irrigation dam two miles from the start and two men, Herb Peterson and Jerry Maybry, both of St. Paul, were lost and presumed drowned. Only Ted Koenen, 31, survived.
Anaconda Copper announces a new pilot plant at its Anaconda facility to refine beryllium oxide ore concentrates into high purity metal. The unit aims to develop efficient refining methods for space craft use and leverages the firm’s extensive Spurs Mountain district ore fields in southwestern region.
Two Butte youngsters were treated for injuries after separate weekend auto crashes. Debra Urich a 7 year old of 2605 Port Townsend was admitted to Silver Bow General Hospital after a bicycle she rode collided with a car driven by Betty R Wood of Homestead Ottawa and Porter intersections the bike was knocked 16 paces by the impact. John C Matthews Jr 16 was taken to St James Community Hospital for observation after his car crashed into the rear of a police stop at Civic Center. Matthews residence is 2405 Nettie.
The Louisiana Republican party instructed its 20 delegates to back Barry Goldwater of Arizona for president and Charlton H. Lyons of Shreveport for vice president at the national convention.
James B. Shea was elected chairman and Frank McHugh vice chairman of School District No. 1 at a reorganization meeting. Lester Zeihen and Robert Vivian joined the board, with holdovers Kneebone, Shannon, Lochrie, and Leary continuing. Shea outlined goals for growth and cooperative effort to meet educational needs.
Divers reached the wreckage of a Caravelle from Middle East Airlines Air Liban near Dhahran Saudi Arabia and reported no survivors among 49 aboard including 23 Americans. The crash occurred during approach in a sand storm Friday night while the plane tried to land. Rescue efforts faced rough weather as US and British forces searched coastal waters and shallow reefs.
Two cargo planes collided during approach to Clinton County Air Force Base near Wilmington Ohio killing about 14 of 19 aboard. The planes carried 10 Air Force reservists and nine Army paratroopers from Fort Campbell Ky. Injuries included three servicemen, two critically, with reports of several missing in darkness and possible parachute landings.
Passengers aboard the Montana Centennial Train traveled from Washington to Baltimore and joined a downtown parade led by a Dundalk boys band. Montanans visited the White House, rode in a press event, and were greeted by Maryland officials. The day included a race at Laurel and an upcoming Orioles Yankees game dedicated to Montana. Large organizations seeking picnic ground reservations on 16 national forests in Region One must pay a special service charge after May 1. Missoula houses the regional headquarters. Deer Lodge Forest supervisor Rolf B. Jorgensen said families and small groups using individual campground tables will not be charged.
