Eye witnesses describe a weekend riot in Butte where mobs wrecked a private home at 2424 Locust and killed rabbits and chickens. Juveniles said to be paid by adults to destroy property, with one report of a $20 payment. Police present but ineffective. investigations continue into gang funding and coercion.
The aged mining camp Butte sees its proud reputation shattered as violent mobs terrorize homes and loot property after a contract breach between Miners Union No. 1 and the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. Citizens demand an end to outlawry and a return to order.
In Chungking on April 18 the American-equipped Chinese First army neared Kangchuling 36 miles from Changchun as Communist artillery pummeled the city core. Marshall arrives for talks to end civil war while air scouts report massed Communist forces near Kangchuling and heavy fires destroy the Manchukuo museum fortress.
The Carpenters union reports damaged Butte houses are unfair and bars carpenters from repair until talks with the Miners union occur. Allan Thomas signs as president of Local 112. Neil Weston, head of the union, says no action has been taken yet.
Russia China and Great Britain united against the United States at an informal four power council session in Tokyo over how Gen MacArthur headquarters should present information. The meeting adjourned without agreement on procedure as Major General Marquat defended unrestricted speaking time.
President Truman asks Herbert Hoover to return home to urge Americans to eat less and feed the hungry abroad. He also appeals to farmers and wheat holders to deliver grain under a plan designed to protect them if prices rise. Hoover, in Cairo after Europe tour, may return to present famine conditions forcibly on radio.
An unidentified pilot in a mill type plane flew illegally high and nearly collided with an Eastern Air Lines passenger liner over a Philadelphia suburb. Captain Kelley, the liner’s pilot, executed a sharp maneuver, saving 23 to 21 aboard. The mysterious aircraft then dived, throwing passengers against the cabin, with six taken to Alexandria hospital for head injury checks.
The House passed an amended OPA bill 355 to 42 and sent it to the Senate, signaling an uncertain fate. Bowles warned price controls may not survive the Senate restrictions, while President Truman hopes for better results. A Democratic-Republican bloc pushed changes, drawing Bowles’s warning of potential economic disaster. continuation of the bill was opposed by a 370 to 20 vote.
Washington April 18 Republican split surfaced in the Senate over the 3.75 billion British loan as Sen Stanfill Ky joins supporters with reluctance while Sen Langer ND denounces the measure as a fantastic proposition. Polls show Republicans splitting about evenly on the issue.
The House of Representatives adjourned Thursday at 4 08 p m until Tuesday April 30. Members had been in session almost daily since January 14 and started home for Easter holidays. Senators will not get a similar holiday due to remaining business in the Senate.
In the UN Security Council Britain and Russia sharply disagreed onSpain as a Nazi inspired threat and on the wisdom of breaking with Franco. Gromyko backed Poland France and Mexico for a break while Cadogan aligned Britain with the Netherlands and Brazil opposing the move. A five man subcommittee was urged by Hodgson to study the Spain situation with a May 17 deadline.
Sheriff officers summoned jurors Thursday afternoon for a retry of Howard H. Kauf 33 ex-Seabee charged with murder of his former wife Hazel. The 60 taxpayer special venire plus regular jurors selected under Judges Downey and Lynch marks the sixth venue in months. The first trial ended in a 15 hour deliberation and a deadlock.
Miles City reports the death of Katie H. Crawford, 78, after injuries from a Sunday automobile accident four miles south of town. A Minnesota native who moved to Montana at 15, she is survived by her husband, Elmer Crawford, and a daughter.

Three unions in Butte and Anaconda vote to approve a new contract with Anaconda Copper Mining. Butte Miners Local No. 1 approves a $1.48 daily wage increase plus 91 cents per hour retroactive pay from Oct 1, 1945, to Apr 1, 1946, ending a 10 day strike and restarting mine operations. Anaconda mill and smeltermen vote 481 to 23 in support, with two voided. Great Falls Reduction workers also accept by standing vote, about 400 present with all but ~3 in favor.
Seattle April 18. A 20 year old red haired woman Joan E Baker described as the Benny Parker of the West was arrested with a cache of loot. Detectives Lyskoski and Freeman found guns jewelry musical instruments radios and household goods valued at more than 3000. She had lived three weeks in the forest south of Seattle surviving on stolen eggs and chickens and surrendered without resistance saying she might have shot if they had children with them.
In Los Angeles on April 18 Secretary Wallace denounces a recalcitrant minority in the Democratic party for not backing administration policies in Congress. He urges voters in a Jackson Day address to give the President the tools to work with and warns against electing a reactionary Congress that would dull progress on the employment act.
Beverly Hills California April 18 Actress Susan Peters and her actor husband Richard Quine fostered a 10 day old boy brought from Texas. Peters was paralyzed in a hunting accident a year ago and the couple now expand their family with the newborn.
An emergency fact-finding board urged a 16 cent hourly wage rise and rule changes for over 200,000 railroad engineers and trainmen threatening February strike. The call mirrors April arbitration awards to 1.25 million workers but remains nonbinding. Cleveland officials commented on the move as talks linger.
On Thursday in New York a shots incident occurred in a skyscraper office over Fifth Avenue. Jose Acebal, 38 and a Merchant seaman, fired at his wife Margaret Acebal, 38, her employer Frank Luria, 50, and himself after taking the boss’s dictation. About seventy people were present in the outer office. Acebal was critically injured and hospitalized at Roosevelt. the others were in serious condition.
Washington April 18 The House unanimously approved a bill granting veterans top priority in buying government owned surplus property and reserving some goods for veterans only.
