In a monthly department review Secretary of Labor Perkins says about 2,750,000 people secured jobs in the last year and March payrolls rose by 419,500, lifting manufacturing employment to 80.8 percent, the highest since December 1930.
President Roosevelt plans to meet western senators at the White House to outline his stance on silver legislation. He will veto any bill seen as disrupting his monetary program and prefers permissive action only. Democratic senators King and Thomas say the bloc seeks mandatory measures or a clear administration plan to rehabilitate silver.
The city council designated Utah, Arizona and East Park streets as part of US Highway 10 following a state highway commission request. A paving contract is planned next month to extend from Front Street to Gaylord via Utah, Arizona, and Park, with rules against encroachments and a minimum 25 mph speed limit. The change will redirect traffic and alter flow from the current routes via Rowe Road or Front Street to intersect with the westbound highway on South Excelsior.
Officials of the Home Owners Loan corporation plan to prosecute a group of major and minor employees across state offices on charges including forcing workers to contribute to political funds and using offices for drinking and dancing. Some cases will involve stock penalties and prosecutions. Chairman John H. Fahey ordered the actions as part of the post reorganizational drive begun last November. Continued on page 2 column 2.
Helena April 18 The weatherman brought sunshine to Montana farmers aiding spring operations. The Bureau of Agricultural Economics reports no precipitation beyond light showers in northwest counties while some southeast areas lack rain. Seeding of spring wheat becomes general after prior soil wetness. winter wheat shows healthy growth across most of the state.
In Washington April 18 the Costigan sugar bill, backed by Senator Edward P. Costigan, seeks to classify beets and sugar cane as basic commodities under the AAA. Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg urged no beet industry growth limits, noting a 1550,000 ton beet quota. He warned healthy domestic sugar prevents foreign price dominance, citing past price swings from 25-30 cents to six cents. The measure aims to stabilize the industry and aid 80,000 U.S. beet sugar farmers, plus American island territories, possessions, and Cuba as key buyers.
Helena April 18. W P Sullivan former chairman of the state fish and game commission arrived to night to declare the old body will hold its scheduled meeting Friday despite Governor Cooney naming an entire new commission. The three members with revoked appointments will refuse to quit and will let the courts decide the matter, Sullivan said.
Receipts of 21611.45 were listed to permit ongoing work as New Deal dominates with a dramatic derby showing. Gold Standard and Silver Standard chase the leaders in the 14th annual Red Triangle derby, sponsored by the Butte YMCA Roundup club, culminating in a dinner dance at the YMCA gym. The campaign, begun April 9, exceeded its $20,000 goal, with details continued on page 2.
Harry Boyington 18 of Livingston Montana, called the Baron Munchausen, was acquitted of murder and found guilty on two counts of first degree robbery in a Los Angeles superior court. He claimed he is a pathological liar and said his police confession was a publicity stunt. The case concerns the December 6 slaying of Frank Cowan, 75.

March returns from beer taxes, the state board of equalization reported today, are running 10 to 35 percent over February. Seven breweries are operating in the state in Anaconda, Missoula, Butte, Bozeman, Billings, Great Falls and Kalispell. two more at Helena and Lewistown will open soon.
In Dillon on April 18 county Assessor D. M. Best received unusual petitions as two residents visited his office to insist their taxes are too low and must be raised to the proper assessment.
Berkeley April 18. Dr Robert Cornish of the University of California refused six offers to be subjects in revivification experiments on humans. The six donors, from California to New York, sought to finance or volunteer in tests, while the doctor noted such work would be murder if death occurred.
Four lawsuits were filed in the DC Supreme Court seeking to compel Postmaster General Farley to restore cancelled air mail contracts. Boeing Air Transport, National Air Transport, Pacific Air Transport, and Varney Airlines argue their awards were fraudulently obtained. The suits name Farley personally, with the government potentially being the true defendant. House committee members meanwhile set aside a permanent air mail bill, signaling only short term fixes and a commission to study the air mail system.
In Seattle on April 18, James Ashe, called a self styled literary agent, faced $16,009 grand larceny charges. The defense claimed Mrs. Sara Shannon bore responsibility for the deeds leading to Ashley's arrest. Spectators reacted with amusement as Judge Matt L. Driscoll urged restraint during opening statements by Albert D. Rosellini.
More than 100 veterans in blue and gray renewed their 1898 pledge of allegiance as they saluted a battle-torn flag. Henry Kaufman administered the oath. muster in day included a concert and buffet luncheon. Participants included Mrs. Harry Slack, Arthur Myers, Charlotte Myers, and Alec Cameron, among others.
Montana generally fair Thursday and Friday with unsettled conditions in the far west. Warmer in the east and south Thursday with a slight temperature rise across those portions.
