Pact signs looming as powers await replies on naval treaty
London April 18 The major provisions of the 1930 naval treaty to be signed next Tuesday were cabled to Washington Paris Rome and Tokyo with replies due Monday. The safeguarding clause allowing increased tonnage if threatened is under scrutiny especially by Tokyo. Britain seeks permission to raise destroyer tonnage to offset French submarine expansions, while sharing increases in US and Japan tonnage. The transfer of 10 percent of destroyer tonnage to light cruisers may also affect the clause.

Airline crash kills de la Vaulx and three others near Newark
Count Henri de la Vaulx, president of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, and three others aboard a Canadian Colonial Airways plane from Albany to Newark were electrocuted 300 feet up when the aircraft struck a high tension wire. The wreck burned after crashing near the power station. Names identified include Mrs. Marie E. Williams of Providence, A. V. Conklin of New York, and pilot John Salway of Albany. The accident occurred at 5:30 p.m. with the craft en route to Newark airport after leaving Albany at 3 p.m. Weather included rain and low visibility as the pilot looked for a landing site.
