Butte approves land sale for Sabey data center plan
Butte Silver Bow commissioners back a 606 acre sale in the county industrial park to an LLC tied to Sabey Data Centers for 1.21 million dollars. The measure comes amid debates over data center electricity use and potential effects on NorthWestern Energy rates. The Public Service Commission is reviewing NorthWestern Energy’s plan to supply up to 400 megawatts to two proposed data centers near Butte, funded by Colstrip plant capacity. Atlas Power is involved in one proposal. one firm has kept its name private. Officials said talks with Sabey have lasted nine months and were kept private for proprietary reasons. A council delay was urged to allow public input. Evan Barrett, a local activist, urged public scrutiny as discussions continue.
