Butte entered a third straight night of calm as miners voted on wage issues. Sheriff McLeod added 80 special deputies while detectives questioned about 40 teens linked to weekend vandalism. Confessions emerged, with some youths paid by adults to commit damage as jewelry theft and gunfire injuries were reported.
Associated Press notes Civilian Production Administration chief John D. Small says the soft coal strike delivers a serious setback to reconversion. He cites fuel shortages closing scores of plants, a drop in steel output, possible railroad curtailments, and 15 brick plants halted, while Ford shifts to a weekend shutdown affecting about 45 000 workers due to parts and steel shortages.
Washington April 17. The question of Easter outfits for Mrs Truman and Margaret remains unanswered. They will not wear new hats dresses or coats. The first lady will check the weather and rummage the closet before appearing to lead the nation's fashion parade. The fashion press has long sought a definite answer from White House staff but none is given.
In a raucous session the House moved toward final passage of an OPA bill loaded with restrictions. An amendment pushing a cost plus profit ceiling overhaul passed 259 to 137. meat price controls were defeated 172 to 223. Subsidies face a Jan 1 halt 245 to 150, with OPA chief Porter warning the action could end price control. House also capped OPA's life at nine months 171 to 144.
Pan-American Airways Lockheed Constellation clipper set an unofficial Honolulu to San Francisco record of eight hours and twenty six minutes before fog forced a diversion to Sacramento California for landing.
Butte residents will observe Holy Week with services across churches. Catholic rites include processions on Holy Thursday. Protestant churches hold Holy Communion at Gold Hill and United Lutheran. Lenten services run daily at the American theater 12:25 to 12:55 pm.
Parochial schools will close Thursday and Friday while Butte public schools close Friday to allow teachers and students to attend Holy Week services. Parochial schools suspend the two day observance annually and officials say public schools will be closed for Good Friday.
Senator Vandenberg urged on April 17 that any foreign lending beyond the 3.75 billion dollar Britain loan be strictly tied to support of the Yalta and Potsdam agreements. He warned new controls on the Export-Import Bank and opposed funds to Polish authorities if free elections are not upheld, while noting that Senate action on amendments may be delayed until mid next week.
Butte aldermen unanimously passed a daylight saving time resolution urging residents to set clocks forward one hour at midnight April 30 and observe it until September 30. The measure makes Butte the only Montana city with an extra hour of sunlight each summer day. The plan, voluntary and without penalties, aligns with wartime daylight efforts and follows related council actions on licenses and governance.
Massachusetts state police said Dorothy Ball a 20 year old heiress from Muncie Indiana missing from Mount Holyoke College since Tuesday was found at a Salvation Army home in New York City E Arthur Ball vice president Ball Brothers Manufacturing Co of Muncie makers of glass canning jars arrived from Muncie and conferred with college authorities about the disappearance He left the campus later in the day without information on his whereabouts
President Truman privately reprimanded Navy Secretary Forrestal and Admiral Nimitz after a sharp public clash over the unification plan. He warned officers against lobbying and said some have crossed the line, while exempting Forrestal and his naval operations chief from the charge.
President Truman endorsed a plan for Americans to voluntarily limit their diet to European standards two days a week and for a government wheat ration to millers and bakers. Officials expect a 25 percent wheat-use cut by mills and bakers, with loaves cut by ten percent. He said Americans eat too much and waste food, and noted relief efforts amid the world food crisis.

Senator Bridges assailed Henry Kaiser as the "coddled darling of the New Deal" criticizing RFC loans tallying about 115 million dollars with much bearing no interest. He accused the government of planning further spending to equip Kaiser's private operations and noted taxpayer funds flowing to Kaiser through various agencies.
Helena April 17 UP A wind shield sticker will be used to renew automobile licenses in Montana next year as steel plates are unavailable. The 1946 steel plates will be kept and the sticker will show Montana’s outline as evidence of revalidation. New cars or non Montana licenses will get a steel plate next year with the same 1946 imprint and sticker.

Marshall arrives in Peiping to help check the spreading civil war as 4,000 government troops and 3,000 local recruits struggle against 40,000 Communist attackers amid rooftop machine guns and mortars.
Prospective jurors continued to be questioned in the re trial of Howard H. Kauf for the murder of his former wife Hazel. Judge Downey recessed until Thursday morning as each side used two peremptory challenges. 116 veniremen reported, 40 were retained including nine from the original panel. State witnesses and defense witnesses are expected to be similar in number to the basic trial last month. Kauf attended the morning session amid lengthy voir dire.
Larry Adams, 10, was in serious condition at St. James hospital after a gunshot wounded him in the lower abdomen at his Ramsay home Wednesday night. The shot, believed accidental, occurred while he and his brother Ronald, 11, were home alone. Patrick, police, and neighbors assisted, and Deputy Sheriffs Harrington Barnicoat Russell investigated the incident.
The Butte Miners Union No. 1 votes today on a wage increase of 185 cents per hour plus 914 cents retroactive pay for Oct 1 1945 to Apr 1 1946. The proposal, backed by joint committees of Butte Anaconda and Great Falls locals, ends a nine day strike and follows discussions with federal conciliator Robert C. Williams.

Anaconda Copper Mining Company informs all employes at the Butte Mines and Shops that identification slips for pay checks will be issued at the Pay Office 18 East Quartz on Friday April 19 1946 from 930 am to 5 pm. Pay checks will be distributed at the same office on Saturday April 20 1946 from 930 am to 6 pm.
