Five powers move naval forces under secret orders near the Dardanelles as southeastern Europe reinforces defenses to root out Nazi influence. Neutrals fear the move signals wider war while Allied units on the Greek coast take counter measures after Italy’s spring maneuvers.
Washington April 17 The Senate approved the 223 million War department civil functions appropriation bill raising about 20 million above House figures and funding 15 million for a Panama canal third lock start. It includes river flood control sums and river projects while the bill heads to conference.
British marines with Norwegian allies seize Narvik and surrounding areas in northern Norway while German troops fall back toward the south. A reporter, detained briefly by British troops, notes German patrols near the Swedish border and Norwegian forces in the area as occupation expands.
Reports from Stockholm say German forces reinforced from Denmark in large transport planes moved north along the Norwegian coast toward Namsos to confront a British force landed there. Norwegian defenders halted the advance at Steinsker, about 50 miles northeast of Trondheim, stalling the push until British aid arrives. The drive seeks to seize Namsos before Britain can establish control and air bases.
Secretary Hull, in a formal statement to be delivered to Japan, called for keeping hands off the Dutch East Indies vital for rubber tin and other materials. He warned intervention would threaten stability and security in the Pacific, noting Japan’s concern for the status quo in the Indies.
City council votes to call for bids on removing rails or covering them with asphaltic pavement. Bids due May 15 but plans exceed $70 000 city funds, making early work unlikely. A fourth plan to fit budget rejected 12 to 4. bid deadline extended to May 15, with mayor urging caution.
The Anaconda Copper Mining Company reports a major growth plan at Butte and Anaconda. Improvements include a 5000-foot hoist at Leonard mine, new drainage at 3800 feet, High Ore shaft expansion to 3800 feet, Lexington shaft enlargement to 2800 feet, ventilation upgrades, and a remodeled smelting department with relocated converting and casting divisions.
President Roosevelt reportedly recommends Congress approve 985 million dollars for the WPA next fiscal year with authority to spend the entire sum within eight months if needed. Sources note the 985 million is tentative and Congress could add funds later. debate existed for a 1.59 billion figure.
London April 17 Britain’s economic warfare minister Ronald C. Cross said Italy appeared to want neutrality but must behave as such. He stated no quarrel with Italy and sought clarity on its stance while noting German pressure and a hostile Italian press tone toward Mussolini’s aims. Cross warned Sweden of possible invasion for iron ore.
The regular annual meeting of Anaconda Copper Mining company stockholders was held in Anaconda. President Cornelius F. Kelley presided as Cornelius F. Kelley EB. Roland Harriman and Robert E. Dwyer were elected as directors for three years. 110,581 stockholders were represented and 4,742,528 shares were present or by proxy. The company secured 35,000,000 dollars in five year serial notes at 1.75 percent to call 33,000,000 of the 4 1/2 percent sinking fund debentures on May 15, 1940, reducing annual interest by 907,500 dollars.
Paul Satko a 49 year old Richmond Virginia welder postponed his 3000 mile voyage to Alaska in a home made ark until Sunday. He built the eight foot wide craft with a 12 year old truck motor and planned to travel with his eight member family seeking a new start. He delayed after learning of civic farewell plans at the waterfront and will stop en route to forage for food and supplies.
Across Shanghai Rome and Kiruna reports reveal serious wartime alerts. British French and American fleets warn of a probable Japanese thrust if Germany invades The Netherlands. Italy calls up four military classes previously rejected. Heavy fighting rages in Swedish mountains.
A Montana forecast calls for generally fall conditions on Thursday and Friday with little temperature change. Expected modest cooling near night, mild highs, and light winds across the region.
German bombers attacked shipping in the Downs early today as heavy firing and aircraft intercepts were heard along the southeast coast. Antiaircraft guns fired while British fighters rose to meet the attackers. Spectators sheltered as explosions and machine-gun chatter lit the sky and vessels near the Downs opened fire.
Berlin reports a series of Luftwaffe strikes sinking or damaging seven Allied ships including a troopship near Narvik and a British cruiser off Norway. A battleship was said to be left in flames and two other cruisers badly damaged. Goebbels tied gains in Scandinavia to victory.
William C. Jackson announced a new post office sub-station will open next Monday at 1716 Harrison Avenue in the Hey-Daddy Toy store. Sub-station No. 1 will serve Floral Park and Harrison Avenue residents, offering stamps, money orders, parcel post, and registered mail alongside existing stations at North Main, West Park, and East Front streets.
