London reports a mobilization expansion as Britons aged 27 to 25 are called in March and April. The plan increases the expeditionary force and by June neutral experts estimate nearly two million men under arms for use on multiple fronts in Norway and beyond.
An instructor from the Denver country club will become the new professional at the Butte Country Club starting May 1, succeeding Jimmy Robinson who departs for Seattle to take a five year post at Jefferson Park. Dowe and his family arrive April 27, and Robinson leaves April 28 after four successful years.
H A Scandrett president of Milwaukee travels via Butte during a two week tour of the railway system en route to Chicago. He and N A Ryan cite war concerns and election developments as uncertainties, but report encouraging business prospects, good crop and soil conditions, and a favorable winter wheat outlook.
A 21-year-old blind girl in Butte mourns the death of her bull terrier Spike killed by cyanide poisoning. The dog was a valued pet with a city wide reputation for tricks and a beloved companion in the girl's home. (Continued on Page 6, Col. 2.)
Tom Stout editor of the Lewistown Democrat News filed an information in justice court charging D N Tip Reynolds editor of the Pink Reporter with the crime of libel on or about April 9 1940 against Stout. The document states Reynolds wilfully and with malicious intent to injure Stout wrote printed published and circulated libelous material about him.
In Washington April 16 Lord Lothian forecast a tighter British blockade in the Pacific to cut supplies reaching Germany via Russia. Iceland and the United States move toward direct diplomatic relations after Denmark’s invasion. Treasury acts to stabilize wartime exchange affecting tariffs on British imports.
Employers in the Butte district are invited to an 8 o'clock meeting in the Chamber of Commerce to hear a wage and hour law discussion and ask questions. L. A. Hill of Minneapolis, regional representative, and W. G. Maloney, western Montana district inspector, will speak followed by a round table Q and A.
The Montana forecast calls for fair conditions midweek with increasing warmth, especially in eastern regions on Wednesday. Expect mild to warm daytime highs and light winds across the state with no precipitation expected in the near term.
A 50 year old woman led a Sacramento murder ring that killed George Cash in San Francisco and dumped Robert Sherrod into the river. Five gang members are in custody as police link the killings to loot splitting and knockout drug actions.
Opening day featured record crowds as Bob Feller pitched a no hit no run gem for the Cleveland Indians in a 1 0 win over the White Sox. Old Lefty Grove limited Washington to two hits in Boston’s 1 0 victory, Kirby Higbee limited the Giants, and Whitlow Wyatt shut out the Bees as part of a day of standout pitching across leagues.
Romania moves to place Black Sea and Danube ports under navy control as war risks rise. Teodorescu introduces emergency powers bill for all ports and waters, while strategic factories build 15 day oil stocks and underground storage. Oil from British and French interests may total about 350000 tons as royalties to state.
Charles A. Joy announces the Trask-Lowlands forest highway northeast of Butte will resume in a few days after preparatory work. The project is about nine tenths of a mile from completion after last fall finishing 4.6 miles, with minor shaping done until heavy snow halted progress. Forest service crews will begin work this week to finish the remaining stretch.
Stockholm reports a German train, packed with troops, moved through Norwegian held terrain near Storlien three miles from Sweden, advancing toward severing Norway into north and south. Norwegian railway workers aided by false intel allowed the passage while Hegra fortress stayed in Norwegian hands and Narvik remained under joint British Norwegian control.
Premier Paul Reynaud told the French senate that the Allies won the first great battle with Germany and had sunk or damaged about one third of the Reich fleet off Norway. He delivered the war report in a ten minute briefing.
Mary C. Dougherty a junior at Girls' Central high school won first place in a city essay contest sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of Butte post 1448 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dora Castiglioni took second, Gerald Tomis third. honorable mentions went to Margaret Sheehy and Leslie Watts. Dougherty's essay titled Benefits of Democracy was read at a school program yesterday.
