Postmaster General Brown outlined air mail and regular postage increases to curb the national mail deficit. He backed the Watres bill to shift to a mileage scale for air carriers, predicting rates rising to 7 or 8 cents an ounce.
The great Butte Y derby ended with a grand banquet after setting all time records. It produced the largest values and new money ever collected, and membership surpassed the 1921 peak by over 200.
Max Winker, a New York banker, estimates American banks will lend 667 million dollars in Latin America this year. Brazil and Argentina dominate demand with 150 million and 454 million respectively while Bolivia Colombia Uruguay Chile and others seek funds for development projects and improved railways highways and utilities.
A L Stone president of the State Bank and Trust company and longtime Dillon resident died in South Pasadena California after ill health. Born October 16 1860 in Auburn Kansas he moved to Butte in 1885 and Dillon in 1888 where he lived until his death. He was bank president from December 24 1912 until his passing with limited activity in the last year. The funeral plans were to be announced after return of the body to Dillon.
The forecast for Montana indicates Thursday and Friday will be fair with little temperature change. No rain is expected and skies should remain mostly clear in the period ahead.
Butte city council passed a sweeping traffic ordinance without dissent and it takes effect immediately. The measure, led by J. C. Ryan’s traffic commission, requires stop and go signs in the business district, tighter parking limits, brake tests by police, and new speed controls. Parking and time limits apply on Park Broadway Main between Montana Arizona Galena Granite with morning and evening restrictions.

Frank, president of the Great Falls Butte and Salt Lake City line, reports rising air passenger traffic nationwide. He notes mail lines adapting to carry passengers and a growing airmail volume as planes save time for business travelers.
Great Falls April 16 Aged bachelor farmer William Trainor 58 faces first degree murder charges after his brother John Trainor died from a gunshot wound inflicted at the ranch on April 8. County Attorney Frank Gault cited testimony from Miss Mary Trainor and neighbor Mrs. William Lentz as key evidence.
Tom Sims, a self-proclaimed voodoo mystic, was fatally shot by 25 Kansas City officers during a two-hour siege at his Blue River shanty. A police officer was wounded by a shotgun blast amid the standoff as Sims fired from his doorway and refused to surrender.
Mrs. Hoover sustained a painful back injury after a fall this afternoon at the White House. The incident occurred in Washington.
Senator Swanson of Virginia suggested a doorway inscription for Hoover fishing camp on the Rapidan river. It read: Lord suffer me to catch so large a fish that even I in talking of it afterwards shall have no need to lie.
Burglars believed to be four men backed a building truck to the Tia Juana club house on Harrison avenue and carried off a 500 pound safe containing about 40 dollars and papers belonging to J. R. Marling. The safe was found under a wooden bridge on Ottawa street opened and rifled. Entry was gained via a second floor door and veranda lattice broken to drop the safe. Marling’s truck is missing and arrests are expected soon.
Herbert Schumsky enters Jung Brothers drug store in Newark with an imitation pistol that shoots cigarettes. He wears a brown fedora and a camel hair coat, stacks pockets with a New Jersey Advertiser from 1923 and a roll of stamps. A druggist shot him dead after a struggle as the pistol discharged a cigarette.
Wakefield of Minneapolis testifies before the House Banking Committee in Washington urging a group banking system to diversify risk and keep local management. He argues the plan offers security comparable to large banks, aids small rural affiliates, and could restore farm mortgage liquidity and local capital.
Funds discussion in Helena as Montana Development Congress members create the Montana Association. F B Connelly of Billings is named temporary president and Willard Thompson of Butte Chamber of Commerce is tentatively secretary. An upcoming meeting was scheduled by A H Stafford, state agriculture commissioner.
Washington April 16 The senate republican conferees on the tariff bill accepted the house rates on hides leather and shoes restoring duties long opposed in both chambers. The 10 percent on hides 12 to 30 percent on leathers and 20 percent on boots and shoes were adopted with one leather glove increase and no decision yet on narrow laces. Party line vote with three republicans supporting duties and two democrats opposing in each group.
Certificate awards were given to 32 Butte men who completed a six week scout leader training course at a Thornton hotel testimonial dinner. Dr. Curtis L. Wilson praised the graduates and Butte scouts for their active involvement in boys work. The event drew more than 60 scouting affiliates from the area.
