Leftists clash with police over Springer newspaper protests

Thousands of radical leftists in Frankfurt Hamburg Hanover and Essen clash with police to block Axel Springer newspapers. A circulation truck crushed a demonstrator in Hamburg and injuries are reported as police use teargas water cannons and truncheons. Ten arrests occur with barbed wire barriers and weapon malfunctions cited. Protests continue in Hanover and Munich with ring leaders seized and sitdown actions noted.

Marine from Montana Dies in Vietnam

The Pentagon announced another Montana death in Vietnam. Pfc. Gilbert L. Zerbst, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold C. D. Zerbst of St. Ignatius, was killed while serving with the Marine Corps.

Drummond Geologist 68 Dies After Locomotive Crash

Drummond resident and geologist Glen Hawe, 68, was killed Monday near Nimrod when struck by a Milwaukee Road locomotive while crossing a railroad bridge. His dog Kobuck also died. Sheriff Nick Munis cited strong winds as a possible hearing barrier. Hawe was a longtime mining prospector active in mercury and silver and had held various mining and timber roles in Montana. He was born January 9, 1903, and had studied at Drummond High School Boise Montana Tech and the University of Idaho. He returned to Drummond in 1956 to work for Tree Farmers Inc and later pursued mining consulting.

Former Anaconda jeweler C. S. Wahlstedt dies at 100

Charles S. Wahlstedt, longtime Anaconda jeweler and watch repairman later an optometrist, died Monday in Helena at age 100. He celebrated his 100th birthday last September 4 while a resident of the Masonic Home. services are planned at Retz Funeral Home in Helena. He operated a jewelry store on East Park in Anaconda for 46 years and had a career across several states before settling back in Montana.
