Lola Bernard of Butte high school won the Mining district extempo speaking contest at State Normal college Dillon with the topic Congress Should Appropriate Funds to Care for Homeless Boys. Philip Gauchay Dillon placed second and Ruth Kacher Girls' Central took third. other speakers were David Lewis Helena John Powers Boys' Central and Franklin Hall Anaconda. Judges were Rev. J. A. Meeke R. E. Albright and Lee R. Light.
In Bryantown Maryland the Lincoln assassination anniversaries evoke a link to Dr Samuel Mudd whose farm housed John Wilkes Booth after he broke his leg. Booth later as Tyler stayed the night and his false whiskers were left behind as the doctors wife brought him food.
Mrs. Caroline F. Horne a 73 year old widow and wealthy California figure was found dead in her Long Beach hotel apartment with a towel around the neck and head bruises. Police surgeon suspects strangulation while two purses of the victim were found emptied. Her son Walter J. Horne a yachtsman reported the death after failing to reach her by phone. The case follows days of petty theft probes at the hotel.
Clem Hanley, 28, was found unconscious in a jail cell and rushed to St. James Hospital in serious condition after allegedly falling five feet from a top bunk and striking his head on the cement floor. He had been arrested the day before on a vagrancy charge and questioned regarding a pocketbook theft at city hall.
Religious services across Butte halted business from noon to three on Good Friday. Catholic churches filled for the stations of the cross while a union Protestant service at Mountain View Methodist drew seven congregations. Charles Bundy reported his 38 caliber revolver stolen. Detectives traced and recovered the weapon at a pawn shop within minutes and arrested a man who matched Bundy’s description. The suspect was jailed and later handed to county authorities for prosecution.
In Florence Arizona psychiatrists will assess Winnie Ruth Judd as 20 jurors study if she is sane to face possible execution or life sanctuary. The panel will decide mental status before verdict on murder of Agnes Leroi, with the gallows looming near the state prison.
Gwyn Enersen a 19 year old Norwegian student of psychology and philosophy lived for over two months in a hole under a bridge near UCLA seeking solitude and a simple life. She favored a cabin by herself and disliked dormitory quarters provided by the college. She said she regretted being discovered as warmth returned and noted borrowing a blanket at night.
The forecast for Montana calls for sunny or fair conditions across Saturday and Sunday with a drop in temperatures on Saturday. Winds are not expected to be strong and overall conditions remain mild for the weekend.
Paris April 14 Amelia Earhart Putnam received the 1932 Harmon International Aviatrix trophy for her May 1932 solo Atlantic flight the first by a woman alone. Other winners include German Captain Wolfgang Don Gronau international aviator, Prof. Auguste Piccard stratospheric explorer, Captain Ernst A. Lehmann dirigible pilot. United States honors went to Lieut. Col. Roscoe Turner aviator and Lieut. Com. Charles F. C. Rosendahl survivor of Shenandoah crash. The Harmon awards were created by Clifford B Harman.
Fertilizer and power interests urge Congress to remove from the Roosevelt Tennessee valley plan any provisions that would let the government compete with private industry. Spokesmen tell the House Military Committee that industry expansion needs treasury subsidies for government Muscle Shoals activity. Charles J. Brand of the National Fertilizer Association argues against scrapping private enterprise.
A limited number of reserve army officers may be ordered to active duty for six months on a national forest conservation project. Advices from Major Morrison of Billings and Lt. W. J. Marsh announce that captains lieutenants of the line and medical officers will be used with requests sent to the corps area commander. The Butte association reports more than a dozen applications and calls others to contact Marsh or Lieutenant H. H. Sergeant and Lt. C. O. Smithers soon.
Montana Special Agents' Association and the International Blue Goose met in Butte at the Finlen hotel for a semi annual gathering. About 45 members and guests attend the Blue Goose and Special Agents banquet with a policy focus and talks by H F Badger of San Francisco. William E Rae of Havre presided as president with John Pratt of Butte as vice president and George E Stroub of Great Falls as secretary treasurer.
