Anaconda teachers union and the school board split after a two and a half hour negotiating session with no progress. The dispute centers on an arbitration award and an extra proposed payment of about 26 000 dollars to current staff.
A Butte drug party resulted in the death of Richard Troglia, 22, and serious overdoses to John Beavis, 23, Mark Holmes, 18, and two 17 year olds. Two men suspected of attending the event, linked to a pharmacy robbery, remain at large as deputies investigate.
Gov. Tom Judge acts to overhaul the Workmens' Compensation Division as internal rifts persist. James J. Carden resigns amid a 72 day fight over reorganization. Judge orders an audit and names Lawrence M. Zanto as administrator and Norman H. Grosfield as deputy administrator of the $10 million annual claims agency. Sidney T. Smith had barred out of state travel for division staff.
Kenneth Norman Patterson 23 of Kalispell died in a Bear Trap Canyon fall near Norris Madison County officials said. Patterson a Montana State University senior and ski coach fell after his rope anchor broke while climbing with Jeff Wiedemann of Bozeman who was uninjured.

The Montana Power Co. applied to the Forest Service for authority to build a 161000 volt transmission line from Hamilton to Anaconda. It is a preliminary plan with construction at least two years away and would tie to a Missoula to Hamilton line. The route runs across the Sapphire mountains east of Hamilton and through the upper Rock Creek drainage.
President Nixon defended Cambodia raids after a 45 minute briefing by Gen. Haig in Washington. Senate testimony by Charles Brower argued presidential authority to strike Cambodia is constitutional, amid debates on limits and emergency powers.
County Attorney Larry Stimatz seeks affidavits from residents alleging voting irregularities in Butte General Election after 114 absentee ballots go missing. He will publish a personal ad in The Montana Standard inviting people to come forward with signed statements detailing time and place of any incident. Stimatz will not take phone tips and asks for letters or in-person visits only.
