German Woman Champion and U S Skier Die in Swiss Avalanche

Bud Werner, top American ski racer, and a West German women’s champion were killed while filming a sports fashion movie in the Swiss Alps. Three avalanches dropped wet snow trapping 31 skiers. by nightfall four Swiss skiers remained missing, possibly two women.

Partly cloudy with 15 to 30 mph west or northwest winds on Monday and Tuesday east of the divide, with cooler Monday and slightly warmer Tuesday highs 40 to 58. West of the divide, mainly cloudy with possible rain or snow showers and 40 to 50 degree highs. An avalanche near Innsbruck buried several skiers and claimed one 28-year-old Werner, Barbara Henneberger, 23, while others were rescued.

Mediators in Butte Aim to End Trainmen Strike

Washington mediator Leverett Edwards and colleague Frank Switzer arrived in Butte to urge quick resumption of operations on the Butte Anaconda and Pacific Railroad. They and unions seek to break a stalemate. meetings set for Monday at the Finlen Hotel to discuss restoring normal service and reemploying 4,000 Butte workers and 1,500 Anaconda workers.

Tornadoes Strike Plains Region Killing and Destruction

Two storm fronts moved from Kansas into Missouri and Iowa spawning tornadoes that killed at least five people and injured forty. A tornado near Yorktown, Iowa, killed Flora Eichhorst and damaged much of the town while another near Garnett, Kansas, killed three in a vehicle and injured several. The line also hit Pleasant Hill Lone Jack Warrensburg and Lamonte in Missouri, with extensive property damage and many injuries reported.

Armed Prison Escapee Caught by Butte Police

An armed Montana State Prison escapee, Elmer Gleason, was captured by police in Butte hours after fleeing Deer Lodge. He allegedly hijacked a trustee at gunpoint to drive him to Butte, brandished a .38 revolver, and surrendered without resistance. Gleason, 38, formerly a greenhouse worker, had forced trustee Carter to drive him a stolen Ford from Dwight’s home to reach the Mining City.

Missoula Girl and Kalispell Man Dead in Western Montana Crashes

A 16 year old Missoula girl, Linda Wilson, died after a wheel separated on U S Highway 10A near Arlee. In Kalispell, Art Cardin, 60, was struck and killed by a car as he walked along U S Highway 2 near Evergreen. Police note wheel lug failure and driver errors as factors.

County Clerk W. T. Duckham warns registration for the June 2 primary closes Friday at 5 p.m. Voters may register with the clerk and recorder or with any notary public or justice of the peace.
